Is The MEG Worth Watching?

| |
Hi Huneybees,

Going by its movie thrailer, it was inevitable that movie-goers, including myself, entering the cinema hall to catch The Meg (巨齿鲨) for the first time would have compared it with the iconic "Jaws" from 1975.

With the plot of The Meg centered around the attacks of shark, the rescue effects that followed, and the attempt to destroy it (pretty similar to the 1975 blockbuster), I was expecting the thrills to be equal if not better since the shark in this movie was the infamous prehistoric alpha hunter of  ocean - Megalodon - which was at least three times larger than that Great White movie directed by Steven Spielberg; but unfortunately the similes ended here and I was left feeling mixed instead.

As a disclaimer, I have no problem with Hollywood movies co-produced/funded by China companies, as in the case of The Meg was co-produced by Warner Bros from USA and Gravity Pictures from China, since it gave international exposure to Asian talents such as Li BingBing (李冰冰) and Winston Chao (赵文瑄).

Unfortunately, in this case, the scriptwriting for The Meg were plain awful! Clearly written for the China audience in view of their limited English,  I found the scripts for characters in The Meg were rather flat and at times, silly. Also, there were too many "dry" jokes, which I found was rather unnecessary for a thriller. The only two times the audience did laugh was the airing of Thai version of "Mickey" by Pim, during a scene switch to Thailand, as well as the dog named "Pippin" swimming for its life, which I found rather funny but at the same time irrelevant.

The on-screen romance between Suyin (played by Li BingBing) and Jonas Tylor (played by Jason Statham) reminded me of SPG - Sarong Party Girl - as Suyin fall for Jonas Tylor's half-naked but well toned body after he rescued her from the deep.

The power of love had certainly turned Jonas Tylor from a reluctant participant in the rescue mission to someone who became spontaneous in his heroic effects to save everyone, which I found was just unreal especially up against a 23-meter long ferocious shark.

While there no complaint about the acting skills of actors and actresses, it was Meiying, the daughter of Suyin (played by Sophia Cai), who stood out above the rest with her innocent but confident charisma on top of her distinctive Pan-Asian look (fyi: she was born to a Chinese mum and British dad) .

Lastly, the 3D animations in general were realistic but I were looking forward to more actions from the Megalodon through my 3D glass at IMAX but there were not many to wow me, I was waiting for that moment where I'm in the mouth of the beast...

All in all, The Meg is a movie I would give it a miss unless I'm a huge fan of either Li BingBing,  Jason Statham, or liken the idea of swimming near a Megalodon.

Have a Great Weekend, my Huneybees!

JCube IMAX Experience

Hi Huneybees,

Woohoo! Not only JCube is a shopping paradise, they are also famous for its facilities. Other than the huge Skating Ice Rink, the JCube IMAX Theatre is another experience you must go for!

The cinema's just above the Skating Ice Rink.
I watched The Amazing Spiderman that day and I'm loving it! I watched the 2 movie twice and both times are at the Shaw IMAX Theatres. What makes the IMAX theatres different from the other 3D cinemas is the concave shaped screen that they call it the IMAX Theatre geometry. It is to maximize the depth of field and make you feel like you are totally in the movie.

Review of The Amazing Spiderman can be found here.

Shaw Theatres JCube opened on 5 April 2012 with 7 screens, including an IMAX theatre, bringing Hollywood blockbusters and quality entertainment right to the doorsteps of residents in the west of Singapore.

One thing I fear when watching a 3D movie is the distance between the screen and the seats. I remember once, I watched at another theatre and the distance between the first row of seats and the screen was super tight. I vomited bad after the movie.

But, for the IMAX Theatre, there is already like a huge distance from the screen. So even when I'm sitting on the 4th row, I'm watching the movie with comfort. Their 3D glasses are also amazing. I have to wear my glasses below the 3D glasses and most of the time I have to hold and support the 3D glasses but for the IMAX ones, my hands are free to eat popcorn! Yipee!!

IMAX Theatres are my first choice for movies enjoyment, go give it a try if you havn't. :)

Group photo!!!

Hehehe... I had my red contacts on and I can't stop wanting to take a photo with Vampire Bella Swan.
Twilight start soon please???

Pirates of Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D Movie Gala Premiere

Hi Huneybees,

Last night, I attended the Walt Disney, "Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" 3D movie Gala Premiere and it also launched the officially Grand Opening of Shaw Theatres Lido at Shaw Lido Imax. A special thanks to Nuffnang for the tickets.

It's the first time I went to the cinema after it's renovation and I must say, it's so much fresher, more welcoming and definitely an improvement from the last I saw it.

There was an event before, but I was delayed... :(
The ticketing booth and device drop section.
Love the flowers Walt Disney sent to congratulate Shaw Theatres for their Grand Opening.

Screens all over the cinema were filled with Pirates of Caribbean's movie posters.

There were a few media companies that night, giving out the gala premiere tickets and Canon was there to capture the special moment for everyone. Even though I was late, I still managed to grab a picture with Captain Jack Sparrow!

A special memento from Shaw and Canon.
See! Told ya there's Captain Jack Sparrow!

The Captains. Jack Sparrow and Barbossa.
Black Beard and Angelica.
Gelatissimo dropped by and offered free ice cream for all.
Love the Strawberry Sorbet!
This time round, they have left Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom out, but they compensated with lots of eye candy aside Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz. For the guys, it's definitely the mermaids and for ladies, there's some cute Britsh sailors which get 5 secs of fame or Sam Claflin who plays "Philip" across the lead mermaid.

One couple that gets the most exposure would be "Philip and Syrena". A courageous missionary who fell in love with a not so fierce mermaid.

And with such a magnificent set like this, one can guarantee the movie is a must-watch!

This is allegedly the Los Angeles set of the mermaid lagoon at Universal Studios  (via).
I give the movie a 4.5 out of 5 stars!
Go check out the movie in 3D at the new IMAX theatre at Shaw Lido. :)

Muahz,
Christina aka Huney
