Enjoy Mexican Cuisine with a local twist at Platypus Cantina

Hola! It's a brand new month and it definitely calls for a celebration! Imagine a place where you can enjoy Mexican cuisine over a plethora of Cocktails, Margaritas, and Micheladas with your buddies under the stars...

Well, welcome to the newly relocated Platypus Cantina right in the heart of the bustling city. 

Shifting from its East Coast Road home to the bustling CityLink Mall, the cantina is now even more accessible for those working in the CBD area. With different seating zones - including an alfresco area, you can enjoy an "Encanto" moment in the warm and inviting ambience.

At the all-new Platypus Cantina, the full-fledged kitchen now offers a menu that is a testament to nothing short of culinary excellence-from traditional favourites to innovative Mexican classics with a local twist.

Trio Nachos are a must-have, especially for group gatherings to pair with drinks. The trio-coloured corn chips come paired with  3-Cheese Queso Dips, Homemade Guacamole, and my favourite Pico De Gallo. Is it just me? But I feel each dip goes well with different-coloured nachos I would pair the red ones with the cheese dip, the yellow with guacamole, and the blue ones with the Pico De Gallo.

Their Angry Chicken Wings might just be a topic starter. During serving,  the waiter will toss the fried chicken wings in a paper bag to mix them up with their in-house special spiced powder. Though named angry, I find the spice level still acceptable. If you are up to the challenge, you can always try the chilli sauces provided (there's even one called Death Sauce)!

Tacos make great mains, less mess and everyone can just hold and finish them in bites. At Platypus Cantina, you can order the Tacos Platter that comes with 4 different fillings with a bowl of Guacamole.

But for a smaller order, I would recommend the Battered Fish Tacos that come in 2's. The Beer-Battered Fish is wrapped in soft wheat tacos, with Pico de Gallo, Lime Crema, Corn & Braised Black Beans. The slight tangy seafood taste gives the usual tacos (that are filled with pork or beef) a lighter boost on the palate.

If you like something on the crispier side, then try out their Quesadillas. Flour tortillas sandwiching jalapenos, onions, sweet peppers and their in-house 3 cheese blend with choice of protein selection, grilled to the right crisp, served with 3-cheese Queso Dip and Pico de Gallo. 

I would recommend trying the Cactus version. It is something exclusive to the restaurant and the cactus actually tastes a little like bitter gourd; when paired with the fajita & lime fillings, it cuts off the greasiness of meat adding a little healthy touch to the dish.

For those who need a little more carbo. there's also the rice bowl selection. The Spanish Rice Bowl - Pollo Asado has a little kick with spiced Mexican rice, braised black beans, corn, jalapeno & lime crema. Being a cheese lover, I prefer the Tomatillo Rice Bowl - Carne De Res, which has tomatillo spiced rice, beans, Bechamel sauce, Pico de Gallo, Cheese & Queso Fresco. All rice bowls can be served together with 1-2 protein selections.

Check out the Michelada on the right, think you will be up for the challenge? There's even a Sriracha version - Mangochedo and also a margarita named Hell's Angel. They all kick a punch and come on down during Happy Hours 12pm - 8pm daily to try them out; drinks start from as little as $8++!

 

Platypus Cantina is dedicated to making each day an adventure. Other than the Happy Hours promotions, there are also Daily Promotions; from Members’ Monday to Taco Tuesday, Wondrous Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, Fiesta Friday, Shocking Saturday and Sunny Sunday, there's bound to have a special to satisfy every craving and quench every thirst.

Adding to its appeal, Platypus Cantina also offers daily lunch specials with savings of up to 50% from Monday to Friday. These specials showcase fresh salads, savoury burritos, tacos, ensalada, asado, and Oaxacahot chicken, with specific highlights on Tuesdays to Thursdays. On Mondays, the Platypus Cantina’s one-of-a-kind pasta creations steal the show. Indulge in Cheesy Black Pepper Duck Spaghetti, Creamy Truffle Porcini Fettuccine, or the beloved classic beef meatball spaghetti, all priced as low as $9++ per serving.
