Aesop Will Be Returning WIth ‘Scents of Being’: An Enchanting Aromatic Journey at Singapore Night Festival 2024

| |
0 comments
Hi Huneybees,

Aesop is making its return to the Singapore Night Festival with "Scents of Being" a captivating olfactory installation that explores the deep connection between scent and self. From 23 August to 7 September 2024, this immersive experience will be held at the National Design Centre, celebrating the festival’s theme, "Art of Play," while paying tribute to the rich heritage of the Bras Basah Bugis precinct.

The Singapore Night Festival, now in its 15th year, is a vibrant annual event that showcases the city’s cultural and artistic diversity. Spanning from 23 August to 7 September, the festival transforms the Bras Basah.Bugis Precinct into a dazzling display of light installations, theatre performances, aerial shows, and film screenings, offering three weekends of art, music, and entertainment.

‘We are delighted to return to the Singapore Night Festival as we continue our exploration of space and experiential design as way of engaging the olfactive sense, body and mind. May our visitors find calm and delight in a sensual experience where the nose is one’s guide.’ --- Aï Kato, Aesop’s Creative Director

Our sense of smell plays a powerful role in connecting us to our environment and to our memories. It weaves together past experiences, inherent preferences, and fleeting emotions, creating a complex tapestry of human identity. "Scents of Being" honors this profound connection. Within the beautifully restored complex, a mystical forest of softly illuminated arboreal structures invites visitors to discover Aesop’s range of Eaux de Parfum. Each fragrance, inspired by myth, poetry, art, or nature, serves as a beacon in the forest, guiding visitors on a journey of exploration.

A highlight of this installation is the introduction of Aesop’s newest fragrance, Virēre Eau de Parfum. Light and fresh, Virēre evokes memories of sunlit summers and strolls through lush greenery. This sensory experience encourages visitors to rediscover the playful spirit of childhood and the nostalgia of folklore, inviting them to reconnect with their sense of wonder and curiosity.

I can't wait to check out this installation at the Singapore Night Festival 2024. Make a date and have a fun weekend too!

Scents of Being Address: National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969 Date/Time: 23 August – 7 September | 7.30pm – 9pm Fridays and Saturdays | 7.30pm – 12am

Qixi Fest 2023: A Month of Celebrations with Free Qixi Boat Tours, Activities & Finale Carnival

| |
0 comments
Hi Huneybees,

Qixi Festival (七节夕) is one of my favorite Chinese festivals as it comes with a very beautiful story background, a myth of two star-crossed lovers - the Cowherd (Niu Lang) and Weaver Girl (Zhi Nu) The story is derived from actual constellation movements - Altair and Vega, which both characters represent. There are a few variations to the story but it mainly goes like this...

The Origin

Niu Lang came across seven celestial fairies bathing in a lake one day. His companion, a cow (who is actually the God of Cattle, sent down to Earth for violating Heaven's laws) suddenly talked and helped him get acquainted with the fairies as a favor return as Niu Lang once saved him.

It encouraged him to steal their clothes while they are in the water and so, the fairies got the youngest amongst them, Zhi Nu, to go out and retrieve their clothes. They both fell in love and she agreed to his request to marry her. So, she stayed back on earth and have two children with him.

However, when the Empress of Heaven found out that her daughter had married a mortal, she is enraged. She forces Zhi Nu to return to heaven, leaving Niu Lang heartbroken. The cow then told Niu Lang to kill itself and wear its hide. This magical hide would allow him to go to the heavens to find his wife. Niu Lang reluctantly does so and goes to heaven with his two children to find Zhi Nu.

The Empress of Heaven was enraged and used a hairpin to rip a wide river (the Milky Way) in the heavens to separate Niu Lang and Zhi Nu on opposite sides, never to be able to meet each other.

The lovers and the kids were weeping so bitterly, that some magpies took pity on them. They flew up to heaven and formed a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing the pair to reunite. This moved the Empress of Heaven and so she allowed them to meet once a year on the 7th day of the 7th month of each lunar year.

Opening Address by Kim Mui Hoey Kuan Clan (金门会馆 )representative and Qixi Fest Director Lynn Wong

Reviving Qixi Festival

This story has since evolved as the Chinese version of Valentine's Day and me being the horrible romantic believed so, but actually, it's a day when women will pray to the stars for a good marriage and also for the skills and wisdom to make them good wives. Thus the alternate name for the day - Qi Qiao Festival (乞巧节), meaning begging for skills.

During this day, there will be activities to do, girls will show off their needlework and eat a Qixi pastry called Qiaoguo, made from flour, sesame, and sugar. In Singapore during the mid-1800s, this festival was said to be even grander than the Chinese New Year! They even had parties that go up to 10 days!

The women formed sisterhood organizations called Seven Sisters' Associations, or Milky Way Associations, to celebrate the festival together. Qixi Festival was marked by grand public displays of handicrafts in Chinatown - especially those that involved Majies (妈姐, domestic servants) from the Shuntak region - but these traditions have faded into obscurity since the 1970s as many Majies began to retire and returned to their hometown.

This year the Qixi Festival will be celebrated on 22 August 2023 but to bring back the hype after being forgotten for more than 50 years, there will be a celebration over the weekends from 7 July to 20 August. Clan associations, and community partners led by cultural researcher Lynn Wong have banded together to revive the festival in Singapore. You can look forward to 7 weekends of talks, workshops, exhibitions, and tours leading up to a mega two-day carnival at Smith Street, Chinatown on August 19 and 20.

Qixi Fest 2023 Celebrations
In conjunction with the festival, there will be a plethora of activities such as free boat tours and trails, storytelling sessions, crocheting classes, heritage cooking, and demonstration workshops. Most of the Qixi Fest programs are free with a few being ticketed, more details here.
Qixi Fest’s finale event on 19-20 August 2023 is a mega carnival featuring cooking demonstrations of lost heritage foods, special art-in-action showcases with practitioners such as Andy Yeo who will be painting lanterns on the spot, and cultural music performances including guzheng orchestral music and a martial arts display!

Qixi Fest River Cruise
Go back in history as you listen to stories of female migrants as well as the Kinmen people whose boats once plied the Singapore River on this free Qixi Fest River Cruise.
The boat tours are held in collaboration with clan association partner Kim Mui Hoey Kuan (金门会馆) and will take you past key sites and monuments beginning and ending at the Clarke Quay Jetty. Taking place every Sunday from now till 20 August 2023 from 8 pm to 8.30 pm in English, and 8.30 pm to 9 pm in Chinese. There are a total of 12 free boat tours along the Singapore River, accommodating up to 30 pax per timeslot.  Along the way, you can hear stories of yester years and enjoy the scenery along the Singapore River.
*Participants with tickets should arrive 15 minutes earlier for registration.
Dates of Boat Tours: 9, 16, 23, 30 July & 6, 13 August (Sundays)
English Guided Tour: 8pm to 8.30pm
Chinese Guided Tour: 8.30pm to 9pm
Book your spots here.
Talks and Family-Friendly Workshops
Themed (Her)Story there will be free talks, panel discussions & exhibitions to celebrate the female migrant pioneers who brought the festival to Singapore in the 19th century; shining light on factory women who toiled in the graveyard shift and also the (mis)representation of Samsui women in media and the arts.
You can also experience hands-on what it is like preparing for the celebration back in the day through heritage food preparation workshops such as Majie Chilli biscuits (辣椒饼), Tung Ann (炸枣), and Meizhou Yam Balls (芋头圆). You can also pick up some new skills like calligraphy, Hanfu craftsmanship, harmonica playing, outdoor sketching and even riddle-solving!
Tickets can be purchased here.
Make-A-Wish Magpie
Magpies play quite a major role in the Qixi mythology, thus the mascot for Qixi Fest 2023  - QiQi (七七or seven seven). You can pen your wishes on paper magpies and help form a “Magpie Bridge” which will be an art installation displayed at the finale carnival, as part of the 1,000 wishes programme.
For a better chance of having your wishes fulfilled, you can also crochet or customize your very own magpie crochet plushie and let your hopes and dreams take flight (even if you have zero experience in crocheting). Psst, you can also keep your wish a secret by “safeguarding” it in the magpie.
The crotcheting workshop takes place on 22 July at 2 pm and 4 pm.
More details and tickets can be found here.
Gather your friends and families and help revive this lost celebration!
See you there at the workshops and finale carnival!
Look out for these yummy Qixi inspired drink at the carnival ~

Hi Huneybees,

For 1 night only, the world famous saxophonist, Kenny G, will be in Singapore to perform for his fans. Enjoy a night of romantic Jazz in a typical exotic Bossa Nova style as he holds his solo concert "One Night Only – Kenny G Live in Singapore”, this November 8th 2018.

After three years, Kenny G is returning to Singapore and avid jazz and bossa nova fans can look forward to a brand-new interpretation of his latest album, “The Brazilian Nights”, which was released in early 2015. This is the album which helped Kenny G get on to the Billboard 200, at number 86; he was inspired when he was touring and travelling in Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro.  Whilst there, he fell in love with the bossa nova genre, the people in Brazil and the nights of dancing and singing. He decided, then, to include the bossa nova sounds into his new album. The album's deluxe edition also contains four live versions of Kenny G's biggest hits, such as "Forever in Love" and "Heart and Soul."

Being one of the most iconic and best-selling instrumental musicians of all time, with global record sales totaling more than 75 million, Kenny G is a winner of several music awards including a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for “Forever in Love” and American Music Award for Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist,  as well as other wins in his career of more than three decades. With 23 music albums under his belt and a record sale of more than 75 million albums, he earned himself a solid reputation in the industry as one of the world's best saxophone player.

Kenny G is excited to be back, having held his last concert here in 2015. He is eager to share his love for bossa nova that has inspired him for a long while, with his Singapore fans at the exclusive one-night-only performance.

“I cannot wait to meet all my loyal fans in Singapore to give them a taste of what a romantic and exotic night in Brazil is like, through my music. It will be such a great reunion. I hope to be able to share my love for bossa nova with all my fans in Singapore.” --- Kenny G

So Many Instagram Worthy Spots At This Year's Singapore Garden Festival 2018

| |
Hi Huneybees,

Over the weekend, we were at Gardens by the Bay for the 7th edition of Singapore Garden Festival 2018. Being Asia’s premier tropical garden and flower show, there were more than 70 garden and floral displays at The Meadow, Flower Dome and the Supertree Grove, displaying a fiesta of creations from the world's top award-winning garden and floral designers.

There were many different spots this year that covers most part of the garden and this year, they even had buggy rides together with drinks and food stalls scattered along the grounds. It is a very nice touch of addition to the weather was a killer this year. It seems to be so much warmer than previous years and even though I was dressed as cooling as possible, I was still melting and perspiring uncontrollably.

Stepping into the SGF grounds, we were welcomed at a beautiful tent area that houses the 13 Floral Windows to the World where colourful and vibrant cut-flower displays and floral masterpieces with stunning set design and lighting by notable floral designers from around the world are displayed.

There's also the new non-competitive Floral Windows to the World Installation featuring a kaleidoscopic display of blooms created by Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz, Best of Show (Floral Windows to the World) designers for SGF 2016. It gives so many ideas to how we can introduce greenery into our living space and how much floral can brighten and be manipulated.

We spent the most time at the 13 Fantasy and Landscape Show Gardens for the top award-winning 80 sqm creations gardening luminaries from around the world (Australia, France, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States of America) got us snapping photos away.

Every creation is a gorgeous Instagram worthy photo and the one we loved the most is the Precious Land by Tom Massey (UK) where the landscape turns from day till night with a glowing sun and dark waters to represent Singapore's vulnerability towards warmer climate change and the threat of rising sea water levels.

The main event has got to be the Orchid Extravaganza in the Flower Dome. Not only do you get to hide from the sweltering heat, you can also get to check out the world's largest family of flowering plants, Singapore's heritage - Orchids in full bloom.

There are countless species of orchids gathered here and every corner in this dome, makes a great backdrop (*except for the busy crowds) for your selfies, especially when this year’s orchid display is creatively conceived by award-winning Singaporean filmmaker Royston Tan.

Huge beaded Nyonya beaded shoes accompanied the orchids with Singapore's signature Peranakan shophouses in the back, welcomes the tourists to our strong Asian heritage and culture. It's as though Emerald Hill was shifted right into the dome...

Of course there are other places to explore too, like the 8 Balcony Gardens that features colourful and inspirational displays for home and apartment owners. Visitors can see how these designers transform 3m by 3m spaces into a soothing retreat.

The new ASEAN Garden - a special feature to mark Singapore’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2018, showcasing a myriad of colourful blossoms symbolic of Southeast Asian nations, including lotuses, hibiscuses and orchids, just to name a few. NParks also displayed a series of gardens with different themes featuring plants such as fragrant flowering edibles and plants with visually cool colours and pleasant scents.

If you are keen in learning more about gardening or learn some greenry tips, there is also the Learning Garden, displays by the Floral Designers Society (Singapore), Singapore Penjing & Stone Appreciation Society and Singapore Gardening Society, as well as various educational talks.

So, come on down to the Gardens by the Bay before it ends. Not only does it make a good spot for photography, you can also soak up the sun and breathe in some fresh air. It's nice to take a stroll amongst the greenery, admired the beautiful and colourful flowers, spot some pretty dragonflies & butterflies, whilst picking up some tips on how we can introduce green ecosystem into our homes...

The Singapore Garden Festival 2018 is till 3 August and tickets can be purchased from the Gardens by the Bay Ticketing Hub as well as from www.gardensbythebay.com.
