Laundry is probably never going to be anyone’s favourite household chore, but if AI can take care of some of the thinking for us, I’m listening.
Samsung has introduced its latest Bespoke AI Laundry Combo in Singapore, bringing more of its AI-powered features into something most of us use every week: the washing machine.
Rather than simply adding more wash programmes, the new models use sensors, AI and Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem to help decide how clothes should be washed, how much detergent is needed and even how energy consumption can be better managed.
And for busy households, that could mean spending a little less time figuring out which setting to use every time the laundry basket fills up.
AI That Pays Attention to What You’re Washing
One of the main upgrades is AI Wash+, which can detect the weight of a load as well as five different fabric types.
The system now recognises Outdoor and Denim fabrics, expanding the range of materials it can identify. Using multiple sensors, it determines the load and fabric type before automatically dispensing an appropriate amount of water and detergent.
It also monitors soil levels during the wash. If your clothes need a little more attention, the machine can adjust the amount of detergent and washing time accordingly. Essentially, instead of expecting us to make all those little laundry decisions ourselves, the machine does more of the adjusting in the background.
There’s also Flex Auto Dispense, which can be configured to hold two different detergents or used for additional detergent capacity. According to Samsung, it can store enough detergent and fabric softener for up to 12 loads, or enough detergent alone for up to 30 loads.
That could be particularly handy if you’re the type who keeps forgetting to top up the detergent until you’ve already started loading the machine.
A 7-Inch Screen Puts Everything in One Place
Another noticeable addition is the 7-inch AI Home Smart Screen. Instead of navigating traditional buttons and dials, the LCD touchscreen acts as the main control centre for the washer-dryer. It gives you access to cycles and settings while learning from your usage habits to suggest frequently used programmes.
Once a wash is completed, you can also check laundry reports through the SmartThings app, including information on water and energy consumption.
Samsung has also integrated its upgraded Bixby voice assistant, so certain laundry functions can be controlled without touching the machine. You can ask Bixby to start a preferred cycle, add an extra rinse, check how much time is left or even explain information appearing on the screen.
Voice control on a washing machine might initially sound like one of those “do I really need this?” features, but I can see the convenience when your hands are already full of clothes, detergent and that one missing sock.
Keeping an Eye on Energy Usage
Beyond fabric care, Samsung is also putting more emphasis on energy management through SmartThings Energy. The app lets users monitor daily, weekly and monthly energy consumption and provides estimated electricity costs, which makes it easier to see how much energy your laundry habits are actually using.
With compatible cycles, AI Energy Mode can reduce energy consumption by up to 60%, according to Samsung. It does this using AI Ecobubble™ technology, which allows clothes to be washed at lower temperatures while adjusting the cycle duration when necessary.
With electricity costs being something many households are increasingly conscious about, being able to actually see your appliance's energy consumption could be one of the more practical smart-home features here.

Two Bespoke AI Laundry Combo Models for Singapore
Samsung is bringing two models to Singapore.
The larger Bespoke AI Washer Dryer EcoBubble™ 21kg + 11kg (WD90F21BCSSP) is available now at selected retailers at a recommended retail price of S$3,299.
For households that don’t need quite that much capacity, the Bespoke AI Washer Dryer Combo 11kg + 7kg (WD90H11C4WSP) offers a more compact alternative. It is also the first white Bespoke AI Laundry Combo equipped with AI Home and is expected to launch in early October, with an RRP of S$2,149.
Is AI Laundry Actually Useful?
Smart appliances can sometimes feel like they’re adding technology simply because they can. But with laundry, there are a few areas where AI assistance actually makes sense.
Automatically adjusting detergent, water and washing time based on what’s inside the drum could help remove some of the guesswork, while SmartThings gives homeowners a clearer picture of how much energy their laundry routine is consuming.
Of course, you’ll still have to sort the clothes, load the machine and fold everything afterwards. AI hasn't rescued us from that part yet. But if the machine can take care of a few more decisions along the way, I certainly wouldn’t complain.
