It's National Day and you can join in the fun even though you didn't get the tickets to the National Day Parade (NDP) 2023. Here's a list of fringe activities where you can also celebrate Singapore's 58th year of independence...

If you are looking forward to catching the spectacular aerial displays by the Red Lions and amazing fireworks at Padang, you can head over early to popular locations like The Esplanade Bridge, Helix Bridge, Fullerton Hotel, or even the lawn outside Asian Civilisation Museum and Victoria Concert Hall.

GetActive! SG Heartland Festivals

But if crowding in the City Hall area is not your thing, the NDP fireworks and aerial flypasts can also be seen at selected heartland neighbourhoods on 9 August too. They will be set off concurrently with the fireworks medley at the Padang at these five sites:

• ActiveSG Bedok Sport Centre
• ActiveSG Jurong West Sport Centre
• ActiveSG Toa Payoh Sport Centre
• ActiveSG Woodlands Sport Centre
• Our Tampines Hub

*Entry into the stadiums starts from 6pm onwards, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Live Telecast of NDP 2023

If not, just lepak at home, and gather your friends and family over to view the NDP live telecast at home. Besides watching on free-to-broadcast TV channels like Channel 5 and Channel 8, the NDP 2023 is also live-streamed on NDPeeps’ Facebook and YouTube social channels.

Come Join The Fun At the Art Carnival At The Padang Tonight!

The Padang, an open green field in the heart of Singapore, well known as a hosting venue for Singapore's Nation Day Parade (NDP) as well as numerous outdoor sports such as rugby, cricket and Formula 1 races, has been transformed into a party space for art lovers and their families for 3 days from 27th till 29th November.

As part of the National Gallery Singapore's opening celebrations, Padang will play host to the Art Carnival titled "Share the Hope". Public will be able to experience the rich heritage of Singapore and Southeast Asian art with a weekend of interactive art installations, community art workshops and artisan treats from 5pm midnight.

The carnival was officiated by President of Singapore - Tony Tan Keng Yam on 27th November, and will be taking place across five large tents, together forming a giant pentagon on the Padang, each focus on a specific theme - namely ‘Family and Community’, ‘Adversity and Conflict’, ‘Passion and Love’, ‘Rebirth and Peace’, and ‘Food and Beverage'.

The star of the Art Carnival belongs to a stunning display of light, sound and visuals set against the building facade of the newly transformed National Gallery Singapore. Inspired by the art within its walls, this show will run from 8pm, 9pm and 10pm for all three days.

As tonight is the last day of the Art Carnival, this show is not to be missed!

Relive The Performance of Both Maroon 5 & Bon Jovi During The Singapore F1 GrandPrix 2015

Hi Huneybees,

The Singapore Airlines Formula One Singapore Grand Prix 2015 may have already ended more than week ago but that does not stop me from sharing with you the two after-race performances that some of my Huneybees might have missed out - Maroon 5 (Saturday) & Bon Jovi (Sunday).
Unfortunately there will not be any review on Pharrell Williams performance as my flight returning to Singapore arrived late that same evening he was scheduled to perform and hence have to forgo the ticket that I already paid for that day.

Maroon 5 performance was a total sell out based on to the size of the crowd that stayed behind after the Formula one qualifying race to watch the American pop band, in particularly Adam Levine, rock the Padang.

The crowd was granted a good live performance from Maroon 5 with mix of both new and old hits such as Payphone, Moves like Jagger, Daylight, etc. plus Adam Levine went topless to show off  his well toned but heavily tattooed upper body, towards the end of the show, received screams louder than the race itself!

Unfortunately the 1 hour performance was too short in view of the high price people paid for the Day 2 ticket, many specially to catch the band perform here. Also, the security decision to close all but 1 entrance to the concert ground - in the name of crowd control - forced many late comers to fight their way into the concert ground from the rear end of Padang, which in my opinion was an invitation for stampede.

After 20 years, Bon Jovi returned to entertain Singapore on the actual race day, but this time the New Jersey rock band performance was a pale shadow of its former self in terms of both energy and appeal.
With the departure of Richie Sambora so was half the charisma of the band live on stage, where his solo guitar play of the band's famous hits such as Wanted dead or alive and It's my life was sorely missed.

Credit to the lead singer, Jon Bon Jovi, who worked tirelessly throughout the concert to fill that void by constantly interacting with the crowd, but unfortunately due to the humid yet hazy weather coupled with his less than ideal physics didn't worked very well for him as he was caught stealing quick breaks between songs.

The lukewarm reception from the crowd during the introduction of several unfamiliar songs from the band's thirteenth studio album - Burning Bridges - summed up the band's performance for that evening.

In summary, while drama has been unfolding on the Formula One Marina Circuit race year on year, that could not be said the same on the choice of the performers for the post-race concerts.
Let's hope the race and event promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd will do a better job next year!

Flashback : MAYDAY (五月天) Concert At 2014 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX

Hi Huneybees,

SINGAPORE FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX by SINGAPORE AIRLINES may be over but the ultra-high energy performance by MAYDAY (五月天), in front of 40,000 fans at Padang on Day 1 of the race, still replays vividly inside my mind.

Announced by Ashin (陳信宏) “Treat this as a large-scale Mayday concert”, the band performed hits after hits from  JUMP, DNA to 恋爱ing to the delight of the fans who had started queuing for the best spot to catch the band as early as 3pm as witnessed by Monster (溫尚翊).

Here are some flashback pictures that I captured during the concert.

 

Apart from making the fans dancing and singing along to their songs, MAYDAY (五月天) also created a Laugh Out Loud moment when Guitarist Stone (石錦航) attempted to speak in (broken) English: “We are really exciting today because there’s a great race there.”

Mid-way through the 100 minutes concert, the band slowed down the tempo a little by making a request to switch off the lighting around the stage while asking all fans to switched on their handphones to create a beautiful starry backdrop before the band performed their ballad 星空. That was certainly the most memorable moment of concert in my opinion!

 

As echoed by Ashin (陳信宏) at one point during the band's performance “Do you miss Mayday a little? After we finish all our songs, you will miss us even more", I could not wait for their 9th studio album to be released!

Tease your Senses and Delight Your Soul @ the Singapore Arts Festival 2012 Festival Village

Hi Huneybees,

The Festival Village returns for its second edition at the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival. From 18 May to 2 June 2012, the Esplanade Park transforms into a choice destination for arts entertainment for all Singaporeans, with more than 300 free performances by a wide range of local and international artists, across seven different spaces at the Village. The Village remains a key emphasis for the Singapore Arts Festival with the largest number of free performances in its history.

I was at the media preview last evening and here are some of the highlights...

 

This is just a little teaser video. There will be activities happening from 18 May - 2 June 2012 at the Festival Village and the programmes are all free! Do go on to Singaproe Arts Festival's website to find out more.

The Festival Village is located at Esplanade Park, right opposite the Padang.
