We Are Infatuated With The Phantom of the Opera

Hi Huneybees,

Thank you Base Entertainment Asia and Lunchbox Theatrical Productions for letting me cross off another to-do off my bucket list. It's been my dream to catch the legendary musical that got my interest in Broadway production and being able to do so with W (my ever so loving hubby), made the whole love story plot even sweeter.

The Plot

For Huneybees who are unfamiliar with the story, Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of Paris Opera House. During this time, he was mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine. He lures her to be his protege and seeks her love in return. Yet, when Christine showed love for her long love interest Raoul, the Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn where jealousy, passions, and madness combust into an epic tale of love.

The Set

While everything was so well thought of and planned for easy packing for the purpose of tours around the world, no details were forsaken. Right from the beginning, when the curtains pulled back, the golden wonder of the pristine stage replica of the theatre literally took my breath away as the chandelier rose to the ceiling. The entire set design was simply magnificent and intricate as though I was sitting there in the Paris Opera House!

Thanks to the backstage tour, I got to learn about how some of the magic unfold for Phantom of the Opera,  To allow for the exchange of set between scenes fast, such as when the Phantom takes Christine down into the depths of opera, clever use of  body doubles and silhouettes helps to create the catwalk movement.

See how cool the staircase from the masquerade scene is being pulled up and kept behind the scenes.
Easy for packing and also what a clever use for space...

Also, the smart use of candles peek from little trapholes on the floor helps to create a perspective as The Phantom's lair unveiled while he takes Christine on a boat, that is actually remotely controlled by a staff backstage, so there is no need to make tracks on the stage floors.

The Cast

For me, Jonathan Roxmouth (The Phantom), Meghan Picerno (Christine Daaé) and Matt Leisy (Raoul) have such great chemistry on the stage and their vocals paired off with each other perfectly. Especially with Jonathan's low and strong baritone vocals in comparison with Meghan's high pitched soprano vocals, I get goosebumps every time they sing on stage as the nostalgia of playing back these musical tracks on the CD back in my college days seizes me!

Meghan played the sweet songstress so well that I can literally see her character grows on stage from the initial young little dancer in the back to become the main lead later in the play.
Also worth mentioning is the prima donna  - Carlotta Giudicelli - for her high pitch range of vocals, which I feel is definitely on par with those of Christine's, making her such a strong character who I can't forget.

The Verdict

By now, Huneybees will already know that I have truly enjoyed myself watching The Phantom of the Opera at Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands Singapore. Even though the story has been told many many times before but watching the actors performing live on stage, the beautiful set and costumes and the hauntingly mesmerizing song pieces got me drowned in the theatre, made my virgin experience of the play so precious and spectacular. It's the first time I feel fully immersed in a production as though I was part of the story, it was such an emotional roller coaster for me, I even cried when Christine left the Phantom for Raoul...

While it has been the third time W watched this play, having caught the first two during his times in England donkey years ago, he was still as excited as I was when we watched The Phantom of the Opera here. He even hummed to the tune of the score over the last few days after catching the play!

Needless to say, we both love The Phantom of the Opera and will recommend this with our lovely Huneybess, whether if it is the first time you catch it or like W, having watched it before. Certainly, a good moment for a couple like us to spend a lovely evening date together!

The Phantom of the Opera will be in Singapore till 8 June at the Sands Theatre @ Marina Bay Sands. For ticketing details and more booing information, go to  http://huneyzworld.blogspot.com/2019/04/facts-on-phantom-of-opera.html.

Facts on The Phantom of the Opera

Hi Huneybees,

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade

Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade! Every face a different shade
Masquerade! Look around, there's another mask behind you

A song that's of so familiar to me when I was in the school band back in those secondary school days. "Masquerade" a song by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the musical - The Phantom of the Opera made such a great song to open any performance and this piece was challenging one for one who plays the flute and piccolo. Play it well, and you can shine brightly amidst the huge band, if not, just one note wrong, everyone will know you made a mistake. It was a stressful time for me, practicing day and night just so I do not let my band down, but also because of that experience, I fell in love with the piece and always wanted to catch the musical in person and feel how the live band would sound with the actors on stage.

I've already made a date with hubby this April when The Phantom of the Opera returns to Singapore once again, have you gotten your tickets yet?  Here are a few fun facts for you, on the musical to share with your friends. Do get your tickets early before the show leaves Singapore again...

There are

 • 22 Scene Changes throughout the musical
 • 281 Candles in total

 • 250kg of dry ice is used for the theatrical smokey scenes

Hi Huneybees,

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes back to Singapore this December for a strictly limited season. Hubby and I caught the musical when they were in town back in 2015 and we definitely will not miss it again this time too. There's something magical about watching musicals several times, you capture and "learn" different things from each experience.

Being one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, CATS world premiered at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances and since then, it has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 81 million people worldwide.  Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

Be enticed into the magnificent musical score composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, including the poignant hit song ‘Memory’, which has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow.

Get Truly Wireless With Crazybaby Air 1S

Hi Huneybees,

I've always wanted to get a pair of wireless earbuds so that I could share the music I'm listening to with my hubby. When we go on trips, trekking, jogging or even a session down at the gym, it's always so weird when we are both on our individual music and interacting coz we can't hear each other.

I always wondered wouldn't it be nice if we each had a side of the earbud, wire-free, listening to the same music and having the other "open" ear available as we speak to each other? Well, I gave the Crazybaby Air 1S True Wireless Headphones a whirl and I'm loving it. After all, it has won the iF DESIGN AWARD by iF International Forum Design GmbH this year as a symbol of design excellence around the world!

The Crazybaby Air 1S True Wireless Headphones feels almost weightless, very easy to bring around and fit into any pockets. They fit snuggly into my ears, without causing any pain even after long hours of wearing, not falling off no matter how vigorously I shake my head, and being IPX6 Water & Sweat Proof, it makes a perfect pair to have when I'm working out with my hubby.

Connecting to the earphones is an easy-peasy job and can be done within seconds, together with the Enhanced Bluetooth Connection of using the same PIFA antenna like that of high-end smartphones, with a wide bandwidth and a high signal reception efficiency, I can get a stable, robust connection within a 15-meter distance. Which also means, hubby and I can work on different machines in the gym, whilst enjoying the same piece of workout music. (Yup, another reason to "convince hubby" 😏to get the Crazybaby Air 1S).

Other specialities about the Crazybaby Air 1S also includes its fast charging power, battery life up to 12 hours, wind-resistant and noise-isolation streamline design paired with the built-in algorithm of Crazybaby Air 1S simulates 3D virtual surround sound, not only cuts out the noisy surroundings allowing a more immersive music experience but also creates layered listening experience from symphony to rain sounds.

All in all, I think the Crazybaby Air 1S makes a great companion to have, no matter if you are a fitness buff, a travel bug or simply just a music admirer. It is available at Audio House, Best Denki, Challenger, Courts, Mustafa, Polaris, Popular, Singtel, SprintCass, Takashimaya, Tangs and Treoo.com, at $279.

For the fashionistas, there is also the Crazybaby Nano 1S coming up in May, which comes in several colours. Do keep a lookout for more updates....

The Phantom Returns!

Hi Huneybees,

SO EXCITING! After catching so many musicals, my dream of watching Andrew Lloyd Webber's -  THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is finally coming true coming 2019! I've seen the drama version and the many movie versions in different languages, and every time I catch this hauntingly beautiful love story, I can't stop my tears from flowing...

The Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster has won over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony’s on Broadway and four Olivier Awards in the West End. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA became the longest running show in Broadway history on January 9, 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance, surpassing the previous record holder “Cats”. On January 1, 2018, it celebrated its 13,000th performance and later that month on January 24, the Broadway production celebrated an amazing 30 years on Broadway.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.

I Was Just 5mm Away From This Gorgeous Gem...

Hi Huneybees,

Between me and the extremely rare 51-carat certified intense Yellow Diamond was just a mere 5mm distance, when I had have the privilege to photograph this rare jewelry piece at DeGem at this year's Singapore International Jewelry Expo (SIJE) 2017!

Equally rare and impressive was the single 10-carat certified natural unheated Burma pigeon blood Ruby, my favorite gemstone of all time, presented in a diamond ring setting by DeGem, which even eclipsed its Burma Ruby necklace weighting in at 82-carat in total  presented at last year's expo!

With more than US$150 million in exhibits spread over 8000 square metres, SIJE is not just a trade show for the rich and famous but also a gathering place for world's leading jewelers to showcase their stunning jewelry designs and breathtaking gemstones for the public to appreciate the creativity and fine craftsmanship in jewelry making.

Singapore has its fair share of the spotlight with creations from some of our best known local jewelers. The likes of Carotell and Simone Jewels have been participating since the inauguration of SIJE and I must say their creativity and craftsmanship have never failed to amaze me and this year was no exception.

Michael, the designer behind his creations at Carotell Pte Ltd.

The central piece of Carotell's presentation is the " Spider Orchard", which consisted of a gold pendant that shaped like an orchard and a necklace made up of turquoise and pearl.

The "2-in-1" Ring-Pendant inspired by The Starry Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh

Another two creations that I really like at Carotell after speaking to the creator, Michael, were the "2-in-1" Ring-Pendant inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night and the Beauty & The Beast pendant inspired by the recent Disney Movie.

From Simone Jewels was a beautiful unheated Tanzanite setted within a finely carved Quartz and adorned with Tussle-Mussies (early 1400s for small, round bouquets of herbs and flowers with symbolic meanings) that was inspired by the Georgian period with a modern touch.
The owner of this one and only masterpiece could have a picture of his/her choice laser inscribed to make this a truly majestic gift!

Among the 200+ exhibitors from 26 countries at this year SIJE, I was drawn to Italian Jeweler, Gabriella Rivalta Oro Minato or Finely drawn/painting on gold jewels. Every piece was hand painted with enamel and had to undergo more than 800 Degree Celsius of heat treatment to create such a beautiful jewel.

Do not miss out at the region's largest consumer jewelry show.
SIJE opens from 6th to 9th July 2017 at Marina Bay Sands Singapore Expo & Convention Centre, Hall A & B, from 11:30am to 8:30pm (last day is till 7pm).

Have a lovely weekend!
