We Are Infatuated With The Phantom of the Opera

Hi Huneybees,

Thank you Base Entertainment Asia and Lunchbox Theatrical Productions for letting me cross off another to-do off my bucket list. It's been my dream to catch the legendary musical that got my interest in Broadway production and being able to do so with W (my ever so loving hubby), made the whole love story plot even sweeter.

The Plot

For Huneybees who are unfamiliar with the story, Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of Paris Opera House. During this time, he was mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine. He lures her to be his protege and seeks her love in return. Yet, when Christine showed love for her long love interest Raoul, the Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn where jealousy, passions, and madness combust into an epic tale of love.

The Set

While everything was so well thought of and planned for easy packing for the purpose of tours around the world, no details were forsaken. Right from the beginning, when the curtains pulled back, the golden wonder of the pristine stage replica of the theatre literally took my breath away as the chandelier rose to the ceiling. The entire set design was simply magnificent and intricate as though I was sitting there in the Paris Opera House!

Thanks to the backstage tour, I got to learn about how some of the magic unfold for Phantom of the Opera,  To allow for the exchange of set between scenes fast, such as when the Phantom takes Christine down into the depths of opera, clever use of  body doubles and silhouettes helps to create the catwalk movement.

See how cool the staircase from the masquerade scene is being pulled up and kept behind the scenes.
Easy for packing and also what a clever use for space...

Also, the smart use of candles peek from little trapholes on the floor helps to create a perspective as The Phantom's lair unveiled while he takes Christine on a boat, that is actually remotely controlled by a staff backstage, so there is no need to make tracks on the stage floors.

The Cast

For me, Jonathan Roxmouth (The Phantom), Meghan Picerno (Christine Daaé) and Matt Leisy (Raoul) have such great chemistry on the stage and their vocals paired off with each other perfectly. Especially with Jonathan's low and strong baritone vocals in comparison with Meghan's high pitched soprano vocals, I get goosebumps every time they sing on stage as the nostalgia of playing back these musical tracks on the CD back in my college days seizes me!

Meghan played the sweet songstress so well that I can literally see her character grows on stage from the initial young little dancer in the back to become the main lead later in the play.
Also worth mentioning is the prima donna  - Carlotta Giudicelli - for her high pitch range of vocals, which I feel is definitely on par with those of Christine's, making her such a strong character who I can't forget.

The Verdict

By now, Huneybees will already know that I have truly enjoyed myself watching The Phantom of the Opera at Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands Singapore. Even though the story has been told many many times before but watching the actors performing live on stage, the beautiful set and costumes and the hauntingly mesmerizing song pieces got me drowned in the theatre, made my virgin experience of the play so precious and spectacular. It's the first time I feel fully immersed in a production as though I was part of the story, it was such an emotional roller coaster for me, I even cried when Christine left the Phantom for Raoul...

While it has been the third time W watched this play, having caught the first two during his times in England donkey years ago, he was still as excited as I was when we watched The Phantom of the Opera here. He even hummed to the tune of the score over the last few days after catching the play!

Needless to say, we both love The Phantom of the Opera and will recommend this with our lovely Huneybess, whether if it is the first time you catch it or like W, having watched it before. Certainly, a good moment for a couple like us to spend a lovely evening date together!

The Phantom of the Opera will be in Singapore till 8 June at the Sands Theatre @ Marina Bay Sands. For ticketing details and more booing information, go to  http://huneyzworld.blogspot.com/2019/04/facts-on-phantom-of-opera.html

Facts on The Phantom of the Opera

Hi Huneybees,

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade

Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade! Every face a different shade
Masquerade! Look around, there's another mask behind you

A song that's of so familiar to me when I was in the school band back in those secondary school days. "Masquerade" a song by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the musical - The Phantom of the Opera made such a great song to open any performance and this piece was challenging one for one who plays the flute and piccolo. Play it well, and you can shine brightly amidst the huge band, if not, just one note wrong, everyone will know you made a mistake. It was a stressful time for me, practicing day and night just so I do not let my band down, but also because of that experience, I fell in love with the piece and always wanted to catch the musical in person and feel how the live band would sound with the actors on stage.

I've already made a date with hubby this April when The Phantom of the Opera returns to Singapore once again, have you gotten your tickets yet?  Here are a few fun facts for you, on the musical to share with your friends. Do get your tickets early before the show leaves Singapore again...

There are

The Phantom Returns!

Hi Huneybees,

SO EXCITING! After catching so many musicals, my dream of watching Andrew Lloyd Webber's -  THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is finally coming true coming 2019! I've seen the drama version and the many movie versions in different languages, and every time I catch this hauntingly beautiful love story, I can't stop my tears from flowing...

The world’s most popular musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA makes a long-awaited return to the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands for a limited season from 24 April 2019. Tickets are now on sale through SISTIC and Marina Bay Sands ticketing. Have you gotten your tickets already?

The Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster has won over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony’s on Broadway and four Olivier Awards in the West End. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA became the longest running show in Broadway history on January 9, 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance, surpassing the previous record holder “Cats”. On January 1, 2018, it celebrated its 13,000th performance and later that month on January 24, the Broadway production celebrated an amazing 30 years on Broadway.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which opened at Her Majesty's Theatre in London’s West End on October 9, 1986, starred Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine. It is produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia and produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions.

“Base Entertainment Asia is proud to be presenting the most successful musical of all time in Singapore. PHANTOM has been phenomenally well-received for its brilliant casting, classic staging and sweeping romantic score wherever it has went and we are confident that it will continue to thrill audiences here.” --- Chantal Prudhomme, the Chief Executive Officer of Base Entertainment Asia.

With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking special effects and more than 230 costumes by the late international designer late Maria Björnson, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including The Phantom of the Opera, Think of Me and Music of the Night.

I've Fallen Deeply In Love With CATS ~

Hi Huneybees,

It's definitely a great year start with yet another item off my bucket list! YES!!! I've finally caught CATS the musical!!!

Why it means so much to me? Well, mainly coz of the multiple reviews, being awarded record-breaking number of awards internationally and most of all, the music score if composed by the amazing Andrew Lloyd Webber!

His works include The Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, Starlight Express, etc...

In fact, my love for Andrew Lloyd Webber began when I was playing in the band back in high school. I was playing the flute and the piccolo and the CATS music score focused alot on the wind section - flute, oboe, clarinet; to represent the mysterious, sexy and dainty little steps of the CATS. There was a lot of the flute and piccolo solos and it was an amazing time to have the light shine on me. LOL!

So, you can imagine my excitement and desire to watch CATS. It's great to actually match the music pieces to what I've played before, if only there was a performance back those years when I was performing. Hehehehe...

But when watching the musical, you can not spot the band at all. It was all in the effort to get the audience immerse into the CATS world and get acquainted with Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks with the tribe of Jellicle Cats.

The musical is based on the book of poems Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" (1939) by T.S. Elliot, telling the story a an imaginative tribe of Jellicle Cats as they gather together for the annual Jellicle Ball and each one of them tells their stories to Old Deuteronomy for his amusement. At the ball, he is also set to choose one of the cats to journey to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn into a new life.

I've not been to a musical that is so interactive before. This fast paced performance has the audience entertained every second with cats roaming around the audience, surprisingly appear out of nowhere, keeping us busy with 360° experience. With the stage extended all the way to the seats, you can fully immerse into the world of CATS and if you are sitting along the aisle, you can even give the pats a little snuggle or pat, it's almost like going to a cat cafe. Hehehehe...

During the special CATS media day, I also got the chance to have a chat with Mila de Biaggi who plays Victoria the white kittenVictoria is a beautiful young kitten who is graceful, elegant and timid, which Mila revealed that each character is given 3 characteristics to stick to and display on stage.

It is evidently seen when during the full performance, where each cat plays out their character and even though they might be doing the same dance steps, each of them still stands out strongly. I couldn't stop watching how each of them move and especially Victoria. They are all what I would imagine cats on 2 feet would act like and if you are on the front row seats, you can even see their little facial expressions like twitching their little noses.

Every performer displays amazing dance moves from ballet to tiptap and with the amazing songs and music, this is definitely not a musical to be missed! CATS is already performing in MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands all through to 1 February 2015. Be sure to get your tickets soon!
