My First Impression After Returning From The PC Show 2017

Hi Huneybees,

Singapore’s longest running annual consumer technology and electronics fair, The PC Show, returns at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre, starting from today until end of this weekend!

To bring people back to the fair this year, the organizer has introduced #Techgether as a theme to get visitors together to enjoy and experience new technology products while shopping for bargain. The Amazing Tech Hunt is one such initiative that get visitors to follow a set of clues from a yellow card that can be collected at the lucky draw booth outside Hall B to the latest products and bargains as well as a chance to win a 1-night staycation at the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel.
There are also special zones set up at this year's fair for gamers at the GG Gaming Zone and Know Your Tech no-sales zone for exhibitors such as Creative to showcase their latest technology and hottest products to visitors.

Overall while credit must be given to the organizer for trying to keep the PC Show exciting after 26 years with "refreshing" ideas like Amazing Tech Hunt, I left the fair feeling disappointed.

For one, uniqueness of the fair is fast fading as the products and their suggested selling prices are identical to the competing fair running concurrently at Suntec City Convention Center.

Check out the XYZ Robot customizable for service/F&B industry at Newstead Booth 

Also, apart from Newstead showcasing 3D printers and Service Robots at the fair, all other major retailers are practically selling the same models of laptop and PC in the same space and that's boring!... less Aftershock and HP, which own their own booths.

Last but not least, the traditional software and peripheral brands are visibly missing at a "PC" Show and what replaces them are credit cards and insurance companies that doesn't seem to fit this year's theme of #Techgether.

I Am Getting A New ASUS ZenPad 3 8.0 For My Mum This Mother Day!

My mum has very few recreation activities as she devoted almost 40 years of her life as a full time home maker for the family. With more affordable and faster broadband services coupled with the prevalence of smartphone, she has recently started - as the children grown up - following TVB and Korean drama on her 4.7-inch LCD screen on her handphone.

So for this Mother's Day, I have decided to honour my mum for her contribution and sacrifice by getting her a tablet - ASUS Zenpad 3 8.0 - to improve her video streaming experience while avoiding the eye fatigue and strain.

One of the key consideration in choosing the right tablet is the weight to Display-Aspect-Ratio and ASUS Zenpad 3 8.0 (model Z581KL) is on par with major models such as Apple Mini and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

[UPDATED] Have You Visited The New Flagship Store Of Challenger At Bugis Junction Yet?

When it comes to gadgets, Challenger is always my go-to place to experience and do comparison before purchase and its flagship store at Funan DigitaLife Mall was one of my favourite store to visit until the mall was closed in June 2016 and demolished thereafter.

It was certainly a welcome news when I first heard of the new planned Challenger flagship store in Bugis Junction in late 2016 and boy, time flies and just two days ago, I was invited for a media preview of the actual store at Basement 1!

While the new 14,000 square feet of space at Bugis Junction may be pale in comparison to 53,000 square feet at the former flagship store, the new "integrated retail space" is carefully curated with merchandise, experiential areas and engaging displays, thanks to the data-analytics captured from Hachi.tech

— Challenger's lifestyle-shopping website launched a year ago – to understand shoppers’ behavior and transactions online.

Kudos to the collaboration between Challenger and Samsung on the designated area for Galaxy Plus VRcade, a virtual reality arcade where shoppers could truly immersive in the new gaming experience. I'm also very impressed by the first-ever experiential counters for leading drone manufacturers, DJI and Parrot so now I can actually examine those drones close up, something I can't do with a picture I see online.
I'm equally glad to see the return of a brand new Razerzone – designed for gamers by gamers – featuring the latest, most advanced gaming products despite the area isn't as big as before.

All in all, Challenger's new flagship at Basement 1 of Bugis Junction is a great addition to the group's overall portfolio of almost 50 stores across Singapore, which also include the existing Challenger store at Bugis Junction's third floor!

I truly applause Challenger's continuously strive to improve omni-channel retail approach and this is an example of how successful online learnings can be translated offline to engage shoppers meaningfully.

Giving The ASUS ZenFone MAX A Test Run

Hi Huneybees,

It's been a couple of weeks' experience with the ASUS Zenfone MAX and as shown previously, it is an impressive phone that comes with great battery capacity. So I brought it with me on my day trip to Johor Bahru, Malaysia to 'document' my experience.

As like all overseas trip, I love taking pictures while on the move. That's why the camera function is the most important aspect of a phone when I'm getting one.

There are alot of modes to play with and combined with the 13MP rear camera with dual tone flash and laser autofocus, I can take sharp high resolution photos while hubby drives along the road. I don't even have to miss a moment. All it takes is a split second to focus and snap! 

See these photos above and below. When I've zoomed in 7 times to enlarge, I can still see the details clearly! Even when birds fly by, there's no sign of motion blur at all.  I'm definitely ASUS-converted. =X

Of course, with all these constant photo snapping and having the phone's screen turned on all the time, battery will get drained off very fast. Having to lug a heavy duty portable charger whilst you shop, might seem to be too much a burden on your shoulders. 

This is definitely the moment you are glad you have the Zenfone MAX. With a massive 5,000mAh battery, the phone easily lasted me through the day and I could still "share" my battery life and use it to charge my hubby's phone, using the OTG wire provided. See how easy it is done below...

Just one down side though. Due to the high battery capacity, it does take a much longer to charge the phone to full capacity with the provided charger. It normally takes me up to 5 hours to get it fully charged. But I'm fine with it, since the Zenfone MAX tends to last me about 1.5 to 2 days.

I'm loving the ASUS Zenfone MAX and I'll recommend this to those who likes to be on-the-go and have one device to do everything for you. You can get great photos to boast about and post on your social media apps, whilst getting most of your job done, checking emails, taking notes, sending messages and receiving calls.

First Look At The ASUS Zenfone MAX (ZC550KL)

I hold in my hand the latest ASUS Zenfone MAX! It's the new smartphone that has been raved about for its long lasting battery life.

Here's the specs and a quick lowdown video on the functions of the smartphone: 

• 5.5-inch IPS (1280 x 720 pixels)
• Gorilla Glass 5 protection
• 1.2Ghz quad core Snapdragon 410 processor
• 2GB RAM
• 16GB storage
• microSD slot
• dual SIM
• 13MP camera with laser autofocus
• 5MP front camera
• 4G, WiFi
• Bluetooth 4.0
• Android 5.0
• 5,000mAh battery 

There's been an issue with the previous Zenfone series, for the short battery life and that the design was a little too bulky to hold in hand, but with the ASUS Zenfone Max, both issues were settled to deliver another impressive product in their smartphone lineup. 


This one has a metal frame with the volume and power keys on the right side instead of the usual rear panel placement and the phone is at just 5.2mm width, which is so slim given the large battery capacity! I'm also liking the touch of it with the sleek faux leather finish to match the metal frame. Overall, a good grip and stylish phone.

The 5.5-inch screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and impresses with vivid colors, wide viewing angles and good brightness makes photos pop and you also manually adjust in the a screen colour mode to change the colour temperature or use one of the presets (bluelight filter, balanced, vivid). 

Gaming is also not an issue with not just the long battery life but also the quad core Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. I can play heavy duty games all day and my battery doesn't run out! If you are talking about screened turned on 24/7 with massive social media scrolling, I can easily have the phone running for 1.5 days!

Aand as shown in the video above, you can even use the provided OTG cable to charge up other phones. Combined with the camera features and the amazing up to 30x zoom in clarity photos, I'm really considering this for travelling usage. One phone to rule them all! =X

As for cameras, it has a 13MP rear camera with dual tone flash and laser autofocus. Up front is 5MP camera. Both cameras are impressive in terms of capture speed with the laser autofocus on the rear camera takes a split second to focus on the subject. 

Though the massive zooming in does show alot of details on phone screens, but it becomes a little lack of quality when viewed on larger computer screens or TV. Also, when its under lowlight settings, the pictures do get a little noisy...

All in all this seems like a phone to consider especially if you do not like to have too much things in your bag or like a smart gadget that does all, this is a choice to consider. Except there's one little down point to it. Bundled with a 1A/5V charger, it is horribly underpowered and takes between six to eight hours to completely charge the battery from zero to 100 percent. I would be better if it comes with a higher powered fast charger though...
