Tons of Interactivity At This Year's i Light 2023

Phew! There's so much happening this June at Marina Bay and I'm playing octopus here trying to keep up with my articles and social media postings. I shared about GastroBeats in my previous post and this one's dedicated to i Light Singapore 2023 itself.

Curated to the theme of A New Wave this year, most of the artworks are anchored on the colour

blue which is omnipresent in nature’s blue spaces such as oceans and rivers, and often associated with emotions such as calmness and serenity, inspiring us to contribute to a more sustainable future as we interact with each installation.

If you are making plans to head down, here are some tips...

1) Not just for the weekends

This year's i Light is not only happening over weekends, so to beat the crowd, try making plans to check them out on weekdays instead. I bet it will save you more time trying to "erase" these people from your Instaworthy shots.

2) Get geared up

Spreading across more areas like South Beach and Millenia Walk, be sure to dress comfy and cool. Prepare your mini fans, and chilled drinks and get ready to clock those steps, or get geared up and rent a bicycle to enjoy these art pieces whilst enjoying the breeze along Marina Bay. 

3) Fringe Programmes

This year's iLight will see a lot of fringe events alongside the light installations, so take note of these dates if any catches your eyes...

● GastroBeats

Bayfront Event Space (4pm – 11pm daily)

As the Festival Village of i Light Singapore, GastroBeats offers a month-long celebration of good food, good music and good fun with can delicacies served up by 50 homegrown F&B vendors and live performances by talented local musicians from a variety of genres, such as 53A and Tabula.

● Lightwave: Turning the Tide, presented by Alibaba Cloud

The Promontory at Marina Bay 

Weekdays: Sunday to Thursday – 7.30pm to 11pm (last experience at 10.40pm)

Weekends: Friday and Saturday – 7.30pm to 12am (last experience at 11.40pm)

Lightwave: Turning the Tide imagines a future where human exploits have damaged the world around us irrevocably. Transported to an underwater world, visitors are left to ponder: How have we come to this? Through three unfolding chapters of thought-provoking multi-sensorial light experiences, explore how our way of life has impacted nature, and be inspired to make a change and turn the tide.

*Admission tickets are priced at SGD5 each and can be purchased from Klook.

● Light Wash

Key buildings and bridges across Marina Bay precinct

7.30pm – 11pm daily (with extended hours to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays)

In line with the Festival’s colour theme for this edition, key buildings and bridges around the Bay will be lit up in a blue hue on Festival nights, complementing the light art installations and evoking a tranquil ambience.

● Guided Walking Tour by Let’s Go Tour Singapore

3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 June (Saturdays and Sundays): 8pm to 9.30pm

On this specially curated walking tour conducted by Let’s Go Tour Singapore over four weekends, hear from experienced guides about this year’s Festival theme, A New Wave, as well as the creative ideas, stories and trivia behind the delightful artworks.

● Rediscover Marina Bay Walking Tour

Marina Bay

7, 14, 21 June (Wednesdays): 5.30pm, 6pm, 6.30pm

Find out how the sea was transformed into a distinctive and sustainable district in the heart of our city. Discover what lies beneath Marina Bay to support sustainable living, and how urban planners sculpted a skyline that is distinctively Singapore. Get the story behind the centrepiece of Singapore’s transformation efforts by joining this special 90-minute walking tour led by URA volunteers. A

4) Make a pledge

i Light i Pledge, presented by Alibaba Cloud

This year, the Festival is once again partnering susGain, a local social enterprise championing sustainability, on i Light i Pledge. Pledge your commitment to eco-conscious practices by making small but impactful changes in your daily lifestyles to cultivate sustainable habits.

● The Switch Off, Turn Up (SOTU) pledge calls for all to switch off non-essential lighting and turn up air-conditioning temperatures during and beyond the festival period. Since the Festival’s inception in 2010, SOTU has been a key component of i Light Singapore’s sustainability drive. The initiative has rallied many building owners, corporations and businesses around and beyond Marina Bay to

reduce their energy consumption in lighting and air-conditioning. This year, over 100 buildings and properties will be participating in the initiative (see list of participants here). The programme has also been extended to the public and schools for the first time this year.

● The Be a Zero Hero pledge encourages the public to adopt zero-waste habits such as reducing the use of single-use items and food waste. For each pledge submitted by participants up to the first 5,000 pledges, All Clear - a sustainability enterprise providing offshore and ocean clean-ups - will remove 100g of waste from Singapore waterways. As such, up to 500 kg of waste will be removed as an outcome of the pledge. 

For each pledge submitted online, a visual that is unique to each pledge will be generated using Alibaba Cloud’s AI technologies. The visuals can be viewed on i Light i Pledge’s website and as part of the last chapter at Lightwave: Turning the Tide. This initiative aims to demonstrate how a small step taken by an individual can contribute to a larger sustainability objective. 5) Key Highlights

This edition will see 22 artists from eight countries coming together to showcase 14 captivating light art installations. There's a few that caught my eye and I feel are definitely not to be missed...

● Tree Man by ENESS (Australia)

Location: Event Square

Encircling a sapling in his arms, Tree Man provides sanctuary for a young tree while carving out an inner sanctum for visitors. Falling into his arms feels so warm, so protected as though hugging a real-life BayMax, so comfy to just lean against it.

As one enters the arms of Tree Man, light switches across a spectrum of colours, and sparse melodies on top of a forest-inspired soundtrack are triggered, leaving one to wonder if we can ever find a balance between the digital and natural world. The act of nurturing and connecting with our environment is emphasised in these whimsical light sculptures. Emitting light with heads that are shaped like digital screens, the artwork invites reflection on humans’ insatiable preoccupation with devices, which could be detrimental to our circadian rhythms. 

● Glacier Dreams by Refik Anadol Studio (USA) and Julius Baer

Location: Façade of ArtScience Museum

Inspired by both the beauty and fragility of glaciers, Glacier Dreams is the result of a groundbreaking, long-term research project involving machine learning, environmental studies, and multi-sensory media art. Visual materials collated from publicly available data and institutional archives, together with glacier images personally collected by Refik Anadol in Iceland, are processed through machine learning algorithms and transformed into Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based multi-sensory narratives.

The artist, together with his Los Angeles-based team, hopes to raise awareness of climate change and rising sea levels through poetic glacier-themed experiences, and also contribute to the study of glaciers with their existing AI tools.

● Trumpet Flowers by Amigo & Amigo (Australia)

Location: Clifford Square

Inspired by gramophones, these super-sized flowers burst to life occasionally with a specially commissioned musical score by Otis Studio, accompanied by some of Sydney’s finest jazz musicians. Immerse yourself in this playful and fun musical garden using the interactive keys and try to activate to "whole band". I love how everyone comes together to create a beautiful piece of music, bring in your friends or simply work with the other visitors...

● Résonances by Louis-Philippe Rondeau in collaboration with ELEKTRA (Canada)

Location: Open Plaza, OUE Bayfront

Résonances is an interactive installation that embodies the inexorable passage of time. It seeks to reveal the limit between present and past. As an arch of light appears in darkness, a temporal portal emerges. When visitors cross this threshold, their image will be projected onto the adjacent wall and seem deployed in time through the slit-scan technique. In this visual metaphor, the past constantly takes over the present, and visitors will see their own image fade inexorably into the oblivion of white light. The artwork emphasises that all light is the manifestation of events that have already occurred; the twinkle we see in the night sky is but a bygone snapshot of the stars. Try walking through the portal in different poses, with different people and create your very own timeline artwork.

● Show III by Chen Jiawen, Lai Ling Ling Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore) and James Cook University  (Singapore)

Location: South Beach Main Entrance (next to JW Marriott Singapore South Beach drop-off point)

What does one usually think about in the shower? Let's take a quick one in public?

Inspired by a belief that showers are perfect settings for self-contemplation, Show III is an invitation to unwind outdoors by soaking in its calming blue light, with the company of a composed soundscape and virtual water droplets. The act of showering without water serves as a reminder for visitors to reflect on their water usage. It also aims to provide an alternative environment where one can be free of worries in the bustle of the city.

The menu will feature elevated indulgences from the French stations such as Pan-seared Atlantic Sea Scallops with Fennel Confit and Herbs, 6-hour spice-cured French Magret Duck Breast with Orange Reduction, and Baked Rock Lobsters with Garden Basil Béarnaise made à la minute. Other highlights from the Chinese station not be missed include Seafood Porridge that comes with generous amounts of seafood including dried scallops, crabmeat and sliced fish, Braised Sea Cucumber with Seasonal Vegetables and Beancurd Skin, and Steamed Ginseng Chicken. French desserts take centre stage with over ten patisserie creations including Spiced Pear and Berries Baumkuchen, Raspberry Eclairs, Fraisier, Caramel Choux, assorted Verrines and Macarons.

Starters

The gastronomic journey begins with five seafood and fruit-based salads; the quintessential seafood on

ice with a spread of Lobsters, Oysters, Poached Tiger Prawns, Scallops and Black Mussels, followed by

selection of fresh sashimi and sushi, and seafood-based snacks consisting Oyster Croquettes, Fried

Prawns, Seafood Spring Rolls and Racines’ crowd favourite Ngoh Hiang.

Mains

The epicurean affair include elevated mains in the French stations such as Pan-seared Atlantic Sea

Scallops with Fennel Confit and Herbs, French Magret Duck Breast with Orange Reduction which is

spice-cured for 6 hours, and Baked Rock Lobsters with Garden Basil Béarnaise made à la minute.

Highlights from the Chinese station include Seafood Porridge that comes with generous amounts of

Desserts

French desserts take centre stage with over ten exquisitely handcrafted desserts to choose from.

Highlights include Spiced Pear and Berries Baumkuchen which is exclusively curated for the occasion,

Berry Tarts, and a repertoire of classic French desserts such as Raspberry Eclairs, Fraisier, Caramel

Choux, assorted Verrines and Macarons.

5 Things I Learned After Visiting "Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience"

My recent visit to the "Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience" exhibition left me inspired and in awe of this legendary artist. Not only did I get to step into Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces, but through the exhibition, I also learned more about the artist and how each art piece was created.

Never too late to learn and never give up

Van Gogh only started painting at the age of 27 without any formal training, peers around his age would have already been pretty established. But that did not stop him from his passion for painting, through his life (though short span) he painted more than 900 paintings over a span of 10 years, which worked out to 36 hours per piece on average. 

Talented aside, he truly put in a lot of effort to observe and create his artworks. His life is a testament to the importance of following our dreams, despite the numerous setbacks, he never stopped or gave up. This is an incredibly important lesson that we can all take away.

Selfies are not just for vanity

If Van Gogh lived in this era, he might just be a selfie king. Out of his 900+ paintings, 36 were his self-portraits. Not only do these paintings document how he looked, but they also reveal a lot of the environment, and his emotions through the brush strokes, giving us a little insight to observe Van Gogh’s progress through his lifetime.

My favourite piece has got to be "Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890), Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, January 1889". You can spot so many details in just one painting, you can see despite a wound, he still carried on his passion to paint, always ready to create another masterpiece with an empty canvas on an easel in the back. Alongside a pretty detailed Japanese painting on the wall that shows how much he loved Japanese art and where he got his inspiration to create his infamous Post-Impressionism style.

Practice makes perfect

Did you know the infamous Van Gogh's painting - Sunflowers is not just one painting but a series of 11 paintings? They're all painted with different perspectives of the flowers, different stages of flower growth (in bloom, wilting, or even with seeds ready to harvest), and different settings. And not just only sunflowers, he also did a series of irises and roses in vases too! His persistence in refining his art by studying the subjects is definitely something we can all learn from.

Cut out the noises

Van Gogh was discouraged by many in his life to give it up given that he only sold one painting in his life, but he stayed committed to his art form. He did not change who he was or his style in order to stay with the trend, instead, he found his own inspiration and developed all these masterpieces that we see today. Things might get tough at times but perseverance does pay off.

Embracing other cultures

Van Gogh's Post-Impressionism style is very much influenced by Japanese woodwork art. Being able to appreciate others' culture and art, and develop his own style from there is very impressive. In this modern day where there's talk of bias and discrimination, I must say he was pretty forward-thinking for his time. Maybe we should learn from him, see beyond boundaries and create even more beautiful things?

Having once seen Van Gogh's painting back when I was visiting Paris and now being able to have an even more immersive experience through this exhibition has really made me appreciate his works more. 

Oh! Before leaving the experience, don't forget to leave your "masterpiece" too! Pick your favourite Van Gogh painting, fill it up with your own creative colours and upload it to show it off on the wall of fame screen.

Cathay Hotel: The Curse of the Missing Red Shoe by Vertical Submarine

The headliner this year would be an immersive theatre performance Cathay Hotel: The Curse of the

Missing Red Shoe by local art collective Vertical Submarine. Situated at the Cathay Green opposite the Cathay Building, the act opens with the story of a mysterious curse from more than 60 years ago that led to the separation of two lovers. 

In this gripping anti-fairytale adventure, iconic Cathay characters such as Mat Bond, Pontianak, and Mambo Girl are brought back to life in a surreal version of old Singapore. With the freedom to author their own adventures. SNF’s popular projection mapping installations return with 6 works illuminating iconic buildings in the city. 

1) Stories from Forbidden Hill - Rediscover Singapore’s mythical origins at the National Museum of Singapore with Stories dating back to the 14th century from Forbidden Hill by Maxin10sity.

Midnight Show at the Capitol by MOJOKO

2) Midnight Show at the Capitol - Head to the National Archives of Singapore for a colourful throwback to the cinema of times, which revisits the classic movie posters that used to adorn the walls of Capitol Theatre and Cathay Picture House, created by MOJOKO.

Glitches of You by Amanda Tan

3) Glitches of You - The Stamford Court clock tower will light up with artist Amanda Tan’s exploration of multicultural, modern identity in a dance of glitch art and fractured pixels. Amanda is part of the first group of artists who participated in the masterclass workshops and is presenting a projection mapping installation for the first time.

The Melting Pot by Adeline Tan & Benedict Teo

 

4) The Melting Pot - A kaleidoscopic ode to Singapore’s multicultural communities, co-created by illustrator and visual artist, Adeline Tan, and award-winning DJ, Benedict Teo.

Madeleine by Lueur

5) Madeleine, a pop art style piece by Lueur, a collective of five students from the School of Film & Media Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, which takes audiences on a journey through the stories of the BBB district. 

Through Worlds by Jo Ho & Intriguant

6) Through Worlds - Jo Ho and Intriguant blends audio and visual mediums, lighting up the facade of CHIJMES Hall, showcasing an imaginative world of endless possibilities. You can immerse in multiple perspectives within the history and hypothetical, imagined future of CHIJMES and its surroundings.

#SGNIGHTFEST by Pan-United

Night Lights installations

In response to SNF 2022’s theme Rebirth, the 15 installations will shine a light on the precinct’s rich history and heritage, prompting audiences to reflect upon poignant themes relevant to modern-day issues. 

We can no longer be strangers by Perception3

The over 7-metres long, #SGNIGHTFEST art installation at National Museum, comprises 3D-printed concrete letters specially created by homegrown concrete company Pan-United. Made with sustainable low-carbon recycled raw materials, each giant letter stacks up to 18 layers of concrete weighing at least 60 kg. 

Steps by Victoria Hertel 

Also, Victoria Hertel will illuminate the museum’s staircase in a welcoming white glow which will transform when festival-goers interact with the space through a motion-responsive installation (Steps) that triggers vibrant colour changes. We can no longer be strangers after this by Perception3, located outside the museum, highlights the shifts and changes in the post-pandemic experience.

Fēcundus by Twardzik Ching Chor Leng

On SMU Green, Fēcundus by Twardzik Ching Chor Leng creates a playground of larger-than-life inflatable structures for visitors to come together to build a rice plant or construct their own creations. 

Celebration of Life+Style by Justin Lee

City of Books by Fish Jaafar

Celebration of Life+Style by Justin Lee, situated at the Stamford Arts Centre, is a tongue-in-cheek

juxtaposition of traditional Eastern characters with modern elements calling into question the impact of technology on our daily lives. City of Books, a large-scale anamorphic pavement mural by Fish Jaafar, sheds light on the decline of print media.

obyato bird pitstop by tobyato

Tunnel Graffiti by Lynette Quek

The festival also expands to Fort Canning Park this year, showcasing works that festival-goers can enjoy at any time of the day. tobyato bird pitstop by tobyato is an artistic nod to Singapore’s rich bird biodiversity, inspired by the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings, inviting festival-goers to rediscover the well-trodden park by night. On the paths, you can also find interactive Tunnel Graffiti by local audio-visual maker Lynette Quek. Graffitti "drawings" will line the walls of tunnels, which can be activated by sounds made by you.

Under My Tree Roof by Chloë Manasseh

Under My Tree Roof is artist Chloë Manasseh’s first voyage into translating her artwork into a digital print displayed on the iconic Fort Canning Spiral Stairway is a stunning mural featuring local colourful botanical forms such as wild spice flowers, heritage trees, and native birds.

ALIMPSEST by William Chan & Brandon Taym

TERRARIUM by AUX Media Group 

Over at Armenian Street, ALIMPSEST by William Chan and Brandon Taym is a poetic expression of the artists’ contemporary take on the history and evolution of the now pedestrianized street, through digital images, text and sound. TERRARIUM  dreamt up by AUX Media Group at National Design Center imagines a hybridized reality that ponders future possibilities for nature and how technology could blur the lines between what’s living and what’s truly alive.

NOCTURNE: Conversations with Waterloo by Nhawfal Juma'at

At Waterloo Complex, visual artist Nhawfal Juma'at will present two sculptures (NOCTURNE: Conversations with Waterloo) that are a play on humankind’s intrinsic nature to create and engage in conversation, inspired by his personal observations of people talking, conversing, and laughing in the same space.

An Ocean Without The Anchor by Speak Cryptic

Then there's Paddy Fields by FARM, inspired by rice cultivators along Sungei Brass Brassa. An Ocean Without The Anchor by Speak Cryptic pays homage to the Bugis people and their history as seafarers. The inescapable nine-meter-tall installation will stand at the entrance of Raffles City, taking inspiration from the lighthouse as a symbol of navigation through both life and water. 

Latent (BBB Edition) by Chok Si Xuan

Latent (BBB Edition) by Chok Si Xuan highlights the potential and energy of the precinct, the poetic movements of the mechanical flowers bring life and rhythm to the seemingly solemn location. The work reflects upon the qualities of patience and resilience rooted in the history of the Armenian Church.

Yesterday Once More: Queen Street
(Inch Chua, CJ Bubble Girl, Euphoria Pole by Aerial Studio)

Yesterday Once More: Queen Street - Inch Chua and Tim De Cotta will dive deep into the history of the precinct, spotlighting personal stories from people who lived on the street from the 1880s to the present day through a roving audio theatre performance accompanied by original music by Tim De Cotta.

groups taking the limelight, including Bhaskar's Arts Academy, The A Cappella Society,

Find your rhythm with SMU SoundFoundry, SMU Stereometa, SMU Voix, Yongkytown and Jeyme, and catch circus artist Jonathan Goh risk it all while grooving to music.

At Waterloo Centre, P7:1SMA’s roving act Discoloo Centre will relive the precinct’s past nightlife paired with historical anecdotes of disco fever. Music-lovers can also swing over to Jazz’in @ Capitol

Singapore at Capitol Singapore’s Outdoor Plaza for smooth jazz tunes from home-grown artists such as Amanda Lee Swingtet and The Rhythmakers.

Delight in the magic of the night At Festival Village 

Topping off the night, Dhoby Ghaut Green will transform into an enchanting Festival Village featuring an array of performances, live DJ acts, game stations, and specially curated food and beverage experiences. 

You can groove to the beat at the urban park with five days of music programming featuring acts by local artists such as cover band Cosmic Alley and singers Hashy Yusof and Marian Carmel, covering a variety of genres from urban beats and R&B, to pop covers and electronic music. You can also replenish

your energy with delectable offerings from Fooditude, The Swag Social, and Sofnade!
