There is always only one truth!  

The Black Organization has struck again! This time, we are taken to Hachijo-Jima island, Tokyo; where our main character Detective Conan helps Interpol with a murder mystery involving a new facial recognition tech.

Imagine a software that can detect all our footmarks with just a photo, crimes can be detected earlier, and no matter where the bad guys go, we can easily track them down! Additionally, with just a childhood photo, your adult image can be worked out via CGI, so missing children can be found!

Well, this is the amazing tech which the movie - Detective Conan The Movie: Black Iron Submarine  (名探偵コナン●黒鉄の魚影 サブマリン) revolves around. Engineers from around the world gathered for the full-scale operation of "Pacific Buoy," an offshore facility to connect security cameras owned by the worldwide police forces. The tech is undergoing a test run when one of the creators went missing...

Meanwhile, Conan and the Detective Boys visit Hachijo-Jima at Sonoko's invitation and receive a phone call from Subaru Okiya (a graduate student in the Graduate School of Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University, who is an FBI agent Shuichi Akai and a black-robed organization's Rye) informing them that a Europol employee was murdered in Germany by the Black Organization's Gin and that they are targeting on the new tech too!

Conan, who is disquieted, sneaks into the facility and finds himself in the midst of the missing case. His friend Ai Haibara (who is a former member of the Black Organization but now works with Conan to destroy them) also got entangled and kidnapped too. The story unfolds as he goes on his rescue mission.

Black Iron Submarine is the first time in six films that the Black Organization is deeply involved in the plot, and the film takes us back to the heart of the work. The mix of 2D and 3D animation is pretty smooth,  just not a big fan that the characters are a little more angular compared to the previous versions. His signature red bow tie look took a break for a more casual image, it could have appeared at least once coz when the red bow appeared, it seemed like a little story jump.

All in all, the movie brings back tons of memories and it was fun to catch it with fans during the special screening, where everyone shared exclamations and clapped during climax. It's easy to be brought into the story even for those who have not seen Detective Conan before. In fact, the movie has attracted me to go visit Hachijo-Jima on my travel list!

A little background on the Detective Conan series...

Detective Conan is a detective story about Shinichi Kudo, a high school detective who turns into an elementary school student after being given a special drug by the mysterious Black Organization. Kudo then takes on the alter-ego of “Conan Edogawa,” a young detective. He skillfully manipulates Kogoro Mouri, a slightly ditzy detective and father of his childhood friend Ran Mouri, in order to solve a series of difficult cases while hiding his true identity.

In addition to the various cases that arise, the series depicts a fierce battle against its nemesis, the Black Organization, and the gradual unraveling of the organization’s mysterious ways has continued to fascinate many fans.

Tia Lee 李毓芬 Returns With Animation Series As Prelude To New Song Promoting Female Empowerment

Asian global C-pop star, actress and fashion icon Tia Lee 李毓芬 has been laying a low profile in the recent 3 years. Back on 7 November 2022, she shockingly deleted all her posts on IG, and uploaded a mysterious black six-square-grid with a dark-blue strike through the middle, replacing her profile icon with a broken tiara, leaving her fans baffled and sparking widespread speculation about her next move.

Luckily she didn't keep us waiting for too long. A pilot episode of an animation series was introduced telling Tia's journey and her struggles in the entertainment and fashion industry. This was released as part of a 6 ep cinematic animation series alongside another 6 innovative motion images series as prelude to her new song “Goodbye Princess”.

 

The animation series centered around the underlying message of Female Empowerment for all females to become stronger by embracing their true selves, breaking out of stereotypes, shaking off biases, avoid negativity. Each 30-second episode takes inspiration from a classic "princess" fairy tale, subverting the symbols and images in it, to form a story that is both full of imagination and saturated with the ideas of metamorphosis.

Each episode will be further illustrated and expounded upon by a thematic poster that sums up the theme and message that Tia wishes to communicate through each animated episode. The cinematic design of the 6 posters will echo one another and will be released on Tia's social platforms the day after the release of each animation.

Innovatively, a motion image and photographs of Tia will also be released after each episode to reinforce the story that Tia wishes to tell. Featuring Tia, the imagery of the photography and motion images aims to create a strong contrast between animation and reality.

Director and Project Consultant: Sunny Tang - an award-winning animation director with over 20 years of experience. He has won both the Best Animation Award and the Best Editing Award at the Hong Kong Mobile Film Festival, and the Best Digital Entertainment Award Gold Award at the Hong Kong ICT Awards. In addition, he has scored the music for other blockbusters such as Overheard 3, Wu Kong, Godzilla II: King of the Monsters, and In Geek We Trust.

Join Creator Of We Bare Bears In Creating Your Own Animation!

ARE YOU A FAN OF WE BARE BEARS TOO?! Yes! The creator of Ice Bear, Grizzly and Pan Pan will be in Singapore this April to share more on his animation journey, some tips for budding animators, and his motivation behind his successful Cartoon Network animation series! 

If you are a budding animator and am interested in joining Mr. Daniel Chong, Creator and Executive Producer of We Bare Bears, in a two-day animation workshop, be sure to read on!

Cartoon Network has announced its partnership with Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) for 'Imagination Studios' for a two-day animation workshop. The industry workshop for adults will be held on Friday, 21 April while a workshop for children will take place on Saturday, 22 April.

Workshop attendees will be introduced to animation and get to speak to the experts on the behind-the-scenes of creating a successful animated series. They also will receive the golden opportunity to have their animation work shown on Cartoon Network!

The workshops will be held at PIXEL Studios, a dedicated facility launched by IMDA last year to spur Singapore’s next generation of digital content creators. Both events will be fronted by the talented animator, Daniel Chong.

After building a successful career in Burbank, California, Daniel will speak about his journey as an artist and the process behind creating one of the hottest new animated series.

Those attending the industry workshop will also hear from a number of animation professionals from Turner and leading studios who will each provide insight into how to conceptualize, refine and pitch an idea. You will also be given the opportunity to submit your own animation idea to Turner which, if selected, could be fully funded and produced by Cartoon Network in partnership with IMDA. The project will also be screened on Cartoon Network across Asia!

As for the kids’ workshop, it will be open to all participants aged between 9 and 13, and aims to introduce children to the wonderful world of animation. Through hands on and group sessions, kids will learn how to create their very own stop animation video in a fun and active environment. The session will be conducted by Vaibhav Kumarev, director of Vaibhav Studios in India, and creator of Cartoon Network shorts, Lamput.

Animation Week - Part 2

So, here's part 2 of the animation week where I went for Sinema Move! - Screening of Singapore Legends Series, held at Sinema Old School on Mt. Sophia. Those who have read some of my earlier postings, would know where this place is.

I got to know about this program through an ex-lecturer from NYP. They were featuring animation clips done by my fellow junior animators from NYP in a collaboration with NHB, National Heritage Board. Support them eh? And also maybe can check out what others are up in the local scene right?

These animated films by NYP students are based on Singapore stories and legends in the days of Temasek and the Japanese Occupation.

Legend of Bukit Merah (Video's disabled)
This 2D animation project is adapted from a local folktale - The story of Redhill. This story will be based on a local context, with the characters and the environment set in Singapore during the early 19th century. The story centers around a Malay boy, whose ingenius plan helped saved his village from the attacks of swordfishes. The boy hero was later assassinated because his growing popularity triggered the wrath and jealousy of the Sultan.

Immediately a strange phenomenon occurred after the death of the boy hero. Blood flowed and spilled furiously all over the nearby hill till it was covered entirely with soaking blood. Thus the locals named the bizarre landscape as Red Hill or Bukit Merah in Malay.

Legend of Bukit Timah
Many years ago, as oral tradition tell us, an evil sorcerer once lived on Bukit Timah and ruled this hill as his domain. Many trespassers, who foolishly climbed up the hill, were soon turned into stone as punishment. However, a brave hunter by the name of Berani eventually outwitted the dreaded sorcerer by irreversibly turning him into a chicken.

With the defeat of the sorcerer, many victims - warriors and villagers alike were freed from his powerful spell. Thus begins this ambitious and arduous task to create this spell-binding tale of heroism and magic using digital animation.



Legend of The Sisters' Island
Many years ago, as oral tradition tell us, there were 2 beautiful sisters living in simple confinements of island Singapura. Many suitors tried in vain to woo the sisters to be their lovely bride but failed. The sisters were inseparable and refused any hand in marriage. One day a pirate kidnapped the younger of the two and tried to take her into his boat. The two sisters fought to get away from him but alas drown in raging waters. Twin Islands soon appear where they drown and so the legend begins.



Bukit Chandu
This is a story of the 2nd Malay Regiment which defended Chandu Hill during the Second World War against the Japanese invaders. To ensure that these brave soldiers are forever remembered for their sacrifice, our short animation aims to compliment the Bukit Chandu Museum that was established by the National Heritage Board.




I must say I love the "Bukit Chandu" best, not only did they manage to combine 2D and 3D animation together, the way the story was told, really touched my heart. Some audience where joking to the other 3 animations but when they watched "Bukit Chandu" all was quiet. I guess they felt as much agony as me....

There's been alot of talking about Rapunzel on my blog recently, but I hvn't had the chance to introduce a little behind the scenes to you guys. So here goes....

Synopsis of the movie:

Rapunzel : A Tangled Tale Movie Premiere

Hi guys,
I just caught Rapunzel the animation movie today @ Orchard Cineleisure. All thanks to the premiere tickets I won from Nuffnang's contest. Thanks Nuffnang!

I totally recommend the movie for erm, everyone! Fairytale lovers, animation geeks, kids, mums, dads, couples, etc, etc, etc.....

Why? Coz everything's so magical in the the movie! Ok! To be honest, ever since studying about animation in poly, I see cartoons in a total different perspective. I highly recommend the movie, coz I can feel the heart and blood the crew behind the movie has put in. One aspect that I fell in love with was the texture of the hair, they really did put in alot of effort to make the hair flow like crazy, especially Rapunzel's bunch and the other thing that I love is that there are new aspects of lighting and camera angles.

In all, I would say it's a beautiful love story but with a little twist and adventure. And who doesn't wish to hear Mandy Moore's lovely voice again? I give the movie a 10 out of 10! Totally a Monday-blues-be-gone movie~

So enough of the talk and here's a little synopsis and pictures. Do go catch the movie!
