Would You Travel to Sweden's Sunniest Square Metre? IKEA Thinks You Might.

Hi Huneybees,

A new travel spot has just popped up in Sweden, and it's probably one of the most unusual destinations I've heard about.

No! It's not a new theme park, scenic hiking trail, or luxury resort.

It's a single square metre of land!

More specifically, it's what IKEA has identified as Sweden's sunniest square metre!

After analysing 20 years of solar data together with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), IKEA has identified the exact location estimated to have received the most sunshine in the country. To mark the occasion, the company has installed a permanent monument on the island of Gotland, allowing visitors to experience the sunny spot for themselves; and I'm loving how wonderfully random this sounds.

A Landmark Dedicated to Sunshine

The monument is located on southern Gotland, (an island off Sweden's east coast, just southwest of the town of Burgsvik) and features two stone armchairs inspired by IKEA's SKARPÖ outdoor chair designed by Magnus Elebäck.

While most tourist attractions are built around spectacular views, historical significance, or iconic architecture, this one celebrates something much simpler: sunshine.

For a country known for its long, dark winters, that actually makes perfect sense and according to IKEA Sweden, the project was inspired by the idea of helping people make the most of life outdoors when the warmer months finally arrive.

"As the seasons change, so do the ways we live. When the sunlight and warmth return after winter, people across Sweden move outdoors," explains Linda Vikström, Communications Manager at IKEA Sweden.

The result... a destination dedicated to one of Sweden's most cherished natural resources.

How Do You Find the Sunniest Square Metre in a Country?

Working alongside meteorological experts from SMHI, IKEA analysed data from SARAH-3, a satellite-based climate database that tracks solar radiation across Sweden. The study examined sunshine patterns between January 2005 and December 2025, identifying the area estimated to have accumulated the highest number of sunshine hours over the past two decades.

The winning location averaged an impressive 2,137 sunshine hours per year.
That's nearly six hours of sunshine every single day across an entire year.
But IKEA didn't stop there.

Once the sunniest area had been identified, architect and topographic advisor Erik Gardell helped analyse factors such as elevation, slope, exposure, and shadowing to pinpoint the exact square metre where sunlight historically had the greatest opportunity to reach the ground.

That's quite a load of work just to find the perfect sunny seat. Phew~

Would You Visit?

At first glance, the idea sounds a little absurd.
But the more I think about it, the more charming it becomes.

In a world where destinations compete to be bigger, louder, and more extravagant, there's something refreshing about creating a landmark around a simple human pleasure: sitting in the sunshine.

Would I fly all the way to Sweden just for this?

Probably not.

But if I ever find myself exploring Gotland, I can absolutely see myself making a detour to sit in those stone chairs and enjoy Sweden's statistically sunniest spot.

After all, how often do you get to tell people you've visited an attraction that was identified using 20 years of sunshine data?

That's definitely a travel story worth bringing home!

Hi Huneybees,

Timotei is back! The brand that all ladies sweared by back in the '80s and '90s has relaunched and is back to with their botanical-based & environmentally-friendly hair products to pamper us ladies.

Loving this corner of the salon.
Held at Backstage Salon, we had a wonderful night of terrarium making, invigorating hair wash and relaxing head massage. Definitely a rewarding and pampering time for the stressed and sickened me...

The packaging is now slimmer, taller with a more refreshing look and not forgetting being environmentally friendly. A little more about Timotei

Timotei shampoo was launched in Sweden in the 1970s, and introduced to the UK & Ireland in 1983 with a promise that was revolutionary at the time. In 2010 Timotei’s entire range has been reformulated with 100% Natural extracts to leave hair feeling & looking more healthy & beautiful.

Today, it is an iconic brand all around the world, and similarly produces lasting, beautiful results for women everywhere.

At the event, the lovely stylist at Backstage, gave me a hair wash and shampoo session. It was so relaxing and definitely left my hair smelling good and smooth. There was a faint sesame fragrance, which I'm in love with ~
See my curly hair?

Even hubby likes my hair too! :)
After the nice wash, my hair was blown dry and re-styled. I think they have done a great job! My friends were saying I looked younger and refreshing. I've not tried center parting before, what you guys think?
So back to the shampoos and conditioners. Other than being repackaged, they are also Paraben-free and infused with an active Jericho Rose extract. Not only does it helps breathe life and energy into the hair, it is also known as the Resurrection Flower that can nourish, hydrate and provide anti-aging properties to your hair. I shall leave you with a short write-up on how to create your very own little Terrarium...

Choose a bottle that you like and lay Gravel, Charcoal, Dried Moss and Soil in that order. Make sure you have each layer flat across and then dig a hole where you want your plant to be, put it in, cover with soil and add in decorative pebbles on top, avoiding the plant. Voila! You are done!

With almost no attention, your terrarium will work as it own self contained environment, simply keep it sealed, water 1 tablespoon of water once every 2-3 months and let it grow on its own! Do not put it near the window or in direct sunlight, have it own your workstation or your bedside table to decorate...

Have fun!
Thank you Timotei and Backstage Salon for such a fun night! :)
Beautiful Hair... Inspired By Nature!

New Asia's House Obsession with DJ Matt Joko (Sweden)

Hi Huneybees,

DJ Matt Joko from Sweden will be spinning at New Asia Bar tomorrow evening. It will be house music throughout the evening. And I'm definitely going! I haven't been in the clubbing scene since my marriage, I guess it's time for me to chill out and de-stress after all the hassle man! Come join me tomorrow ya?

A sample of DJ Matt Joko's spin:

Matt Joko started his career as a DJ 1996 in Sweden's St Tropez, Båstad where Sweden's biggest tennis tournament, Swedish Open is held every year. Matt is the resident of the best club in town, Pepe's Bodega, where he has played alongside Axwell, Dirty South, Steve Angello, StoneBridge and Ian Carey to mention a few. During his first ten years of DJ'ing, Matt spent his winters in Cape Town South Africa playing clubs like Jet Lounge, Rhodes House and Mumba so it's fair to say Matt has done the international circuit since day one.

After having nurtured his skills as a DJ for ten years, Matt Joko started producing and one of his first projects were a collaboration with Swedish pop star Meja, which brought him to London getting his education in the best studios. His first single under his own name, 'So House', was signed to StoneBridge's Stoney Boy Music in 2008 and debuted on Robbie Rivera's legendary Miami event Juicy Beach, where StoneBridge dropped it in front of a screaming crowd. After remixing for the likes of Dabruck & Klein, Michael Feiner and Funky Junction, Matt teamed up with US singer SK8 in 2010 to create the master piece 'Inside' that has earned support from the biggest names in the industry and led to remix work for Robbie Rivera, Chris Kaeser and Redroche.

Matt Joko's style is driving house music with energy, a lot of warmth and a latin edge. His 'Matt Joko Big Room' mixes have impressed a lot of international DJs and respected UK music publication Future Music recently featured him in their year end producer special so 2011 looks like the break through year for Matt Joko and it will see him busy touring the US and Asia alongside his Swedish residencies and studio commitments
Just in case, you do not know where New Asia Bar is...
