That Day I Got Tipsy By Midday ~

Hi Huneybees,

I love my Italian wine for its broad variety and I am always looking forward to attending the annual Gambero Rosso’s Top Italian Wines Roadshow in Singapore. This year, with about 300 wines from over 70 Italian wine producers to be appreciated at CHIJMES Hall, including the valuable Masterclasses hosted by Mr Marco Sabellico, who is also Gambero Rosso’s wine expert, it is no wonder I got tipsy by midday that day!

Mr Marco Sabellico, the Senior Editor-in-Chief of Vini d’Italia, conducting a Masterclass

A list of Italian wines selected for one of the three (3) Masterclasses conducted.

The one-day roadshow held on 22nd May 2018 was opened by the Ambassador of Italy to Singapore, H. E. Raffaele Langella, together with Mr Marco Sabellico, the Senior Editor-in-Chief of Vini d’Italia; and Mr Lorenzo Ruggeri, Editor of Gambero Rosso Top Italian Restaurants in the World.

What is a Italian Wines Roadshow without Amarone?!

Entering Gambero Rosso’s Top Italian Wines Roadshow at CHIJMES Hall was like stepping into the history lesson of the nation's wine-making journal, which dates back many centuries, and has been producing a wide array of quality wines - Amarone, Barolo, Brunello, Barbaresco, Chianti, etc. - highly regarded by wine connoisseurs all over the world.

Ruffino Modus is one of those blended Italian red that I really love to drink on its own.

The roadshow, which was usually attended by trade visitors and wine lovers, served as an insightful expeditions for the attendee to discover the characteristics of signature wines from the participating Italian wineries while presenting an opportunity for the unrepresented participating wineries to strike a local distributionship.

One of my recommendation: Castel del Monte Riserva DOC "Vigna Pedale 2014

Another of my recommendation: Lugherino Rosato Vallepicciola 2016

An unrepresented Italian winery at Singapore roadshow that produced great 2009 Bolla Le Origini Amarone and Cavicchioli 1928 Rose Sparkling Wine

Carrying an empty wine glass moving from one column of tasting tables to another, I found myself quickly lost in an exquisite selection of around 300 wines for sampling as I was trying an abortive attempt to pick my favorite wine that day; there were simply too many!

I finally had my welfie with Marco and Lorenzo!

At the end of the day, while I walked away empty handed due to my indecisiveness as well as the thought of two cases of Ripasso and Lambrusco (purchased last year) still occupying in my packed cellar, I must admit my palate was definitely fully satisfied!

About Gambero Rosso’s Top Italian Wines Roadshow

Established in 2007, Gambero Rosso’s Top Italian Wines Roadshow has firmly become a strategic platform for penetrating emerging markets and grasping new business opportunities. Italian wine offerings are so rich and have a wide selection. To address this, the selections at Gambero Rosso represent a guaranteed way for promoting knowledgeable, attentive and curious developments of Italian territories. The basic framework employed comprises an extremely rigid selective criteria of quality used for decades by the Vini d’Italia guide. Now in its 31st edition, the guide is the result of a year of work by an expert team of 53 tasters who tasted 45,000 wines and interviewed wine producers at wineries across Italy, including Ticino in Switzerland for the first time this year. In this edition, 22,000 wines from 2,485 wineries were awarded scores ranging from 0 to 3 Glasses, with 436 wines receiving the highest, prestigious rating of Tre Bicchieri.

Have You Had Your Italian Wine Yet?

Hi Huneybees,

Italian wines have been gaining greater appreciation in Singapore over the past few years, much thanks to the increased popularity of Italian cuisine (more than just pizza, pasta and parma ham...) among Singaporeans and Expats.

However, like Italian cuisine, Italian wine is just too diverse from region to region and hence didn't received the same recognition here (due to lack of education) compared to its traditional "Old World" rival of French wines or the more affordable but consistent wines from the "New World"of America or Australia.

Fortunately, there are both formal and informal Italian wine appreciation classes or roadshows conducted by several local wine merchants as well as Italian Chamber of Commence in Singapore (ICCS) for the benefit of wine enthusiasts here.

One such event is the Top Italian Wines Roadshow that was in town recently to introduce their exquisite, top notch labels to wine connoisseurs in Singapore.

The one day stop-over at CHIJMES was the first of the three South East Asia roadshows, which included Thailand and the Philippines, organised by Gambero Rosso (www.gamberorosso.it), the leader in publishing and training in the field of Italian wine and food.

In its ninth edition of the worldwide Italian wine tour, visitors to the show were feted with tasting tables offering almost 300 wines from Sixty-five wineries, many came with famous and prestigious names.

Marco Sabellico, Senior Editor of Gambero Rosso

Lorenzo Ruggeri, the International Editor for Gambero Rosso was  at Master Class to introduce Italian wines with Lim Hwee Peng
On the education front, there were comprehensive program of seminars (aka Master Classes) led by the Gambero Rosso’s experts, namely Marco Sabellico (Senior Editor) and Lorenzo Ruggeri (International Editor), for the few lucky public who were keen to learn more about Italian wines that day.

There were 3 sessions of master class for wine enthusiasts to savour 20 signature wines, one from each winery.
All of the wines featured are rated with the Tre Bicchieri mark. The Gambero symbol of wine excellence, Tre Bicchieri (three glasses), has become the worldwide-accepted benchmark award, and an unquestioned reference point and a guarantee of premium quality. It has even been chosen as the criteria for access into some of the most important wine monopolies in the world.

Mine favorite? Well there were honestly many to my delight.

From the territory of Franciacorta is a section of the Province of Brescia in the Italian Region of Lombardy that I have discovered two fantastic sparkling wines : Franciacorta Brut Cuvee Prestige - Ca' del Bosco by Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo and Franciacorta Animante Brut by Barone Pizzini.
It was difficult to find a winner between the two as both were subtly perfumed with fruits such as green apple and lime, while giving a dryer, slight residual sugar taste overall.

From Italy's northeast and borders Slovenia, I found a great white wine in Braide Alte 2014 by Livon, which also produced great red wine in Chianti Classico Lucarello 2011 Borgo Salcetino (DOCG).
With its interesting blend of 5 different variety of grapes that included Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato Giallo, Braide Alte 2014 (DOC) has more intensity and structure with taste of honey and a subtle typical fruit sense that could be enjoyed on its own without any food pairing.

Let us all pray that this impressive Italian winery finds a local distributor soon to distribute these amazing wines here.

As for the red, Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2011 by Marchesi di Barolo and Amarone della Valpolicella Sel. Antonio Castagnedi 2012 by Tenuta Sant' Antonio were my top picks simply because they reminded me the taste of the pride of Italian red wines. Having said that, they are best to be consumed in the years to come under proper storage.

The biggest surprise for me was the Orange wine from Collio Ribolla Gialla di Oslavia Ris. 2011 by Primosic. Easily could be mistaken as a spoil wine via sense, this non-mainstream wine is not for everyone as it required an open mind and attitude to try something unique.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organiser for the invitation to this roadshow as I have learnt a lot from both speaking to the passionate representative of each winery as well to Lorenzo Ruggeri, the International Editor for Gambero Rosso, for his detailed explanatory during media walkabout as well as at the Master Class with Lim Hwee Peng, CWE, FWS.

The Top Italian Wines Roadshow was truly a world class event not only to the local wine industry players but also served as an education platform to allow more people to understand and appreciate the beauty of Italian wine making. I am so looking forward to the tenth edition of this event in 2017!

I Was Tipsy At Singapore Wine Fiesta 2012

Hi Huneybees,

Yes, when it comes to wine, I would be tipsy with just a few sips, not glasses, white and red alike. It doesn't help with the fact that my hubby has a large collection of Barolo and Amarone at home.

Don't get me wrong, I love my wines, just could not hold one in public without looking silly with a red face and not walking straight...

Nevertheless, the raining weekend period of 2nd~4th November, didn't defer us (me, hubby and my friend Malcom) from visiting the Singapore Wine Fiesta 2012 @ Customs House (next to Fullerton Bay Hotel), 70 Collyer Quay.

This is the 5th year running of the largest outdoor wine fair in the region,  presented by The Straits Wine Company in partnership with DBS bank, where over 60 winemakers from around the world were featured. Obviously this presented an unique opportunity for us to sample wines from various regions - both new and old world.

This year, the fiesta is buzzing with brand new finds, hot trends and undiscovered gems. Expect trendy rosés (AIX), a stunning find from the shores of Japan (Grace Wines), a Michel Rolland project from India (Grover Vineyards), a Lebanese legend (Chateau Kefraya), gems from Portugal (Quinta do Crasto), a Cava icon (Raventos i Blanc) even a foray into the world of Croatian wines.

The old favourites are back with some new additions to the Straits Wine family. Those with a palate for Italian tipples will find exciting new offerings (Barone Ricasoli, Vietti, Marco Feluga), while new world lovers can look forward to icons of their own (Leeuwin Estate, Logan). If you’re fond of a nightcap, look out for the artisan collection hand-crafted Armagnacs, Calvados, the famous Chartreuse and a vodka in a league of its own, Beluga.

Moscato D'Asti 2011 (Left), Barolo Albe 2006 (center) and Barbera D'Alba 2009 (Right) from G.D.VAJRA
I enjoyed both Mocato D'Asti Cascinetta 2011 and Barolo Castiglione 2008 from Vietti!
Rioja Riserva Especial Gaudi series 2005 from Vodegas Altanza
Manon Roble Tempranillo 2010 from Bodegas Mano A Mano

I really love the aroma of Chocolate wine so much from Rubis
Chateuneuf Du Pape Rouge 2007 from Chateau La Nerthe
Chateau Harmonie Rouge 2009 from Hebard
The above are just some of the old (mainly) and new world wines that most of us enjoyed during this year Wine Fiesta.

While I couldn't resisted and bought a few bottles of Moscato and Chocolate wines during the Wine Fiesta, my hubby decided to stick to his collection of wines that he bought from The Straits Wine Company over the years.

Till next year, it's goodbye to Singapore Wine Fiesta for now!
