The Fray Led 1,759 Fans Toasting To Arthur On Guinness Arthur’s Day

Hi Huneybees,

Last night 1,759 fans came together for the celebration of Guinness Arthur’s Day for the second time in Singapore, with double platinum record artists The Fray. Singapore joined over 55 countries and an estimated 1.7 million people across the world to celebrate the fifth year that Guinness Arthur’s Day has been celebrated globally.

The Arthur’s Day celebration was set up in 2009 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the original lease at St. James’s Gate, Dublin – the home of GUINNESS.

Partying in a specially constructed pint-shaped concert arena at The Promontory@Marina Bay, guests at the concert enjoyed an epic set by the Denver alternative-rock band, and were also entertained by local band Ellipsis – winners of the ‘Play on the Day’ competition who kicked off the night’s revelry.

Opening their sets with their popular songs -  "Syndicate", "All at Once" & "You Found Me" got the fans high singing along to their songs and during the first song, the Guinness Arthur’s Day backdrop came down to reveal a transparent screen that allowed for views of the illuminated Marina Bay and the breath-taking Singapore skyline, making it all so romantic and intimate...

The Fray also led the the huge crowd of fans and invited guests in the signature toast to “To Arthur”, celebrating GUINNESS’ founder Arthur Guinness who was distinctive, bold and epitomizes the concept “Made of More”. "CHEERS TO ARTHUR!!!"

The band, who are in the mixing and editing stage of their fourth studio album, even performed a sneak peek of the upcoming album, debuting for the first time outside the U.S., much to the audience’s delight! Their new songs "Hold My Hand" and "Wherever This Goes", were thrown into the crowd-swaying mix, along with their award-winning tunes "How to Save a Life", "Never Say Never", "You Found Me" and "Over my Head (Cable Car)", amongst others.

At the concert, the table of mystery Singapore-specific artifacts that were hidden at the GUINNESS by the Decades’ Exhibition were also revealed. I didn't know they even had flask memorabilia manufactured! It's amazing how extensive the collection is....

For post-event updates about the Guinness Arthur’s Day Concert, fans are reminded to visit the GUINNESS Singapore Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Guinness.SG
GUINNESS should be enjoyed on Arthur’s Day, and any other occasion, responsibly.

Come Walk Down Memory Lane With 'GUINNESS by the Decades' Exhibition.

Hi Huneybees,

Yesterday, I sneak peeked the ‘GUINNESS by the Decades’ Exhibition, held at the Mint (Moment of Imagination and Nostalgia with Toys) Museum of Toys. There was quite a fair bit of vintage Guinness collectables, related posters and collaterals, which I've seen a few when I was younger.

The exhibition saw a collection of more than fifty unique premiums and advertising materials as far back as the 1900s. Like seen above is a signboard that was used in Singapore, thus the Chinese characters. It is amazing how the board has been kept intact all these years, as thanks to Mr Chang Yang Fa - founder of Mint Museum of Toys. Every piece you see is being collected by him over the years and these are just some of what he have collected so far...

" The 'GUINNESS by the Decades' Exhibition showcases the strong heritage of the GUINNESS brand, which has stood the test of time and today remains as popular and relevant as when it was first brewed in 1759 in Ireland. The initiative to showcase these rare items is very much in line with the Mint Museum's approach to displaying antiquated memorabilia from the world over. that draws visitors into a story told by decades past." --- Mr Chang Yang Fa, Founder of the Mint Museum of Toys.

The Guinness label first started out with the Bull Dog illustration and over the years, different animals have been used for the different markets.

Seen above, the Seated Cat is used for the Indonesian market and the Red-Tongued Alsatian Dog is for the Singaporean market, whilst the Bull Dog is for the Malaysian market. These representations were being carried over to other items such as vintage cups and glasses.

The infamous red-tongued Alsatian dog or "Ang Ji Kao".

The illustrations from John Thomas Young Gilroy (John Gilroy) were also exhibited on the showcards. They were nicely preserved and from that we could see his love to express using animals, relating back to the farmers, circuses and sailors at that time. The approach were more cartoon-y, more cheerful as it could be due to the war period, Guinness wanted to lift up the spirits of its drinkers.

I also found the Alice In Wonderland Parody Postcards and Doctor's Books very interesting. It was catchy and the illustrations were delicate and now with the digital age, it is hard to see such beautiful hand drawn work.

However, nothing beats the Guinness Extra Stout Stoneware Bottle. It has been intact and you can see how beer used to be sold, in comparison with the later glass bottles...

With the Chinese characters, you can see that this bottle of Guinness Stout was made for the Asian markets...

An old newspaper cutting of a Guinness advertisement.

And on this table are some of the Singapore-specific artifacts that will only be revealed at the Guinness Arthur's Day Concert, headlined by The Fray on 27th September 2013. Judging from the cut out silhouettes, can you guess what they are?

"The collection of GUINNESS memorabilia being presented at the Mint Museum's exhibition is truly one that will take GUINNESS fans on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The red-tongued dog or "Ang Ji Kao" is clearly one of the snippets of history that continues to live on our GUINNESS packaging today, connecting the brand's illustrious history and heritage with its modern outlook." --- Mr Rene de Monchy, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore
The 'GUINNESS by the Decades' Exhibition at the Mint Museum of Toys run from 4 to 31 September 2013 during the Museum's opening hours, from 9.30am to 6.30pm daily. Usual admission charges to the Museum apply, with access to the Exhibition included.

Hi Huneybees,

It's 2pm in the afternoon and the sun was high up in the sky, what better than to head on board a yacht and chill out with an amazing bottle of chilled Guinness Stout?!

Let's go!
Yes! I was given a treat at the GUINNESS ARTHUR’S DAY press launch, whisked away at  ONE°15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove for a trip out to sea in the middle of the day while we got all the great news about the upcoming Arthur's Day.

The yacht was previously owned by Jack Nicklausnicknamed "The Golden Bear", is an American professional golfer. He is widely regarded as the most accomplished professional golfer of all time, winning a total of 18 career major championships.

The luxury yacht - Sea Bear is a floating museum, which houses 36 unique pieces hand-selected by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus from the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, Ohio, as well as items personally donated from their home collection.

It's definitely a delight to be one such a luxurious ride...

Kui Jien, the Senior Brand Manager for Guinness briefing us about what to expect at this year's Guinness Arthur's Day.
OK. Now on to the main business. Guinness Arthur’s Day (Set up in 2009 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the original lease at St. James’s Gate, Dublin – the home of GUINNESS) will be celebrated with the concert being held as the highlight event on 27th September 2013.

GUINNESS is seeking 1,759 fans for a bold night out with U.S. stars, THE FRAY, in what promises to be one of the highlights of the live music calendar in Singapore.

Fans can win tickets to the gig by stepping up to challenges. Arthur’s Day 2013 will truly be a ‘money-can’t-buy’ experience which will take place in a unique, purpose-built venue. Unlike most music events, tickets to this year’s Arthur’s Day concert will not be available for sale. Instead, only 1,759 exclusive tickets will be given out to fans and consumers who step up to the challenge through three ‘Acts of Boldness’ activations around Singapore in August which will be revealed on Guinness’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Guinness.SG).

For the digitally-savvy, a special Arthur’s Day Facebook application will be the hub for entries where only the boldest fans will be awarded tickets to the most exclusive entertainment event of the year.

“From start to finish, GUINNESS Singapore is adopting a novel approach to celebrate the pioneering spirit of Arthur Guinness, promising fans a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they can win tickets to. With only 1,759 tickets up for grabs, fans will have to earn their coveted passes by proving they are made of more, unlike any other music event held here. With a brilliant line-up of local bands also vying for a spot to ‘Play on the Day’ and open for The Fray, Guinness Arthur’s Day promises to be a remarkable experience to mark in your calendars!” --- Mr Rene de Monchy, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore
 Play on the Day
As an impassioned and committed supporter of live music in Singapore, GUINNESS is giving one talented local band the opportunity of a lifetime to open for The Fray, an experience for the emerging talents to cherish as they share the stage with industry veterans. To participate, local bands (with all members aged 18 and above) are invited to submit a YouTube video link of themselves performing, in a private message to the GUINNESS Singapore Facebook page by 17 August 2013. Shortlisted bands will then move on to the ‘Play on the Day’ round – a battle of the bands event held at four locations around the island, from 7pm to 9pm on:

20 August 2013: Switch (73 Bras Basah Road, #01-01/02, Singapore 189556)
27 August 2013: Timbre @ Gillman (9A Lock Road, Gillman Barracks, Singapore 108926)
3 September 2013: Timbre @ The Substation (45 Armenian Street, Singapore 179936)
10 September 2013: Timbre @ The Arts House (1 Old Parliament Lane #01-04, Singapore 179429)

The winner will be selected by The Fray themselves after finalists are whittled down by a judging panel and a public vote, leveraging the support of the huge number of live music fans across Singapore. All competing bands will receive tickets to the concert, and the top performer from each venue will win a cash prize of S$1,000. The winning band, selected by The Fray, will receive a further S$2,000, and of course open for one of the biggest bands this decade!

So, where will this concert be? Well, it's a secret, right up till the day before the concert. But what I can tell you is, the venue is somewhere amidst the pictures below. It will be housed in a purpose built,
air-conditioned setup with amazing views of the luminous city at night

Upping the novelty factor a notch higher, a Singapore-centered GUINNESS Heritage Collection will be exhibited, allowing concert-goers to view memorabilia of time past. Steeped in the pages of Singapore’s rich history, the selection of memorabilia showcases GUINNESS’ 144-year long legacy in the country, which continues to this day.

So, are you all set for THE FRAY? Be sure to check on Guinness’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Guinness.SG). Good Luck and see ya there!

Here’s to those who make great things happen!
