Grow a Mo & Raise Funds This Movember

It's November and it's time to "Shave It Off" (*cues Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off") as Movember kicks in. Movember is an annual month-long charity initiative in November that encourages men to grow a moustache (Mo) to create conversation and raise both awareness and funds in support of often-neglected men’s health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer.

To kickstart the campaign, Singapore's favourite footballing sons - Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir teamed up with Gillette at Robinsons The Heeren for the "Big Shave-In".

These 2 footballing icons treated their fans to a rare sight as they took part in a live shave-in. A life-sized artistic portrait of Fandi was concurrently shaved to lead and motivate new registrants in a big way to do their part for Movember.

Movember began in 2003, when brothers Adam and Travis Garone and friend Luke Slattery decided to bring the moustache back into fashion for a month. They convinced 30 friends to grow a Mo for the 30 days of Movember, formerly known as November.

Surprised by the amount of fun they had and the many conversations created by their Mo’s,
Adam, Travis, Luke, and JC Coghlan (one of the 30 friends) came together to make their Mogrowing an annual, official charitable endeavor for prostate cancer. Inspired by what the women in their lives were doing for breast cancer, Adam, Travis, Luke, and JC felt that the moustache was the perfect hairy ribbon for men’s health.

From there, Movember has grown into the world’s largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research, with official campaigns in 21 countries including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Czech Republic and now Singapore and Hong Kong. To date, over 1.13 million Mo Bos and Mo Sistas have raised $166,355,200 to change the face of men’s health.

You guys should also join in the shave-in and it's not too long to start growing a Mo while raising funds over the course of thirty days. The funds raised in Singapore goes towards the Singapore Cancer Society, in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship, research and health aid for men living with prostate cancer. To-date, Movember has raised over $166 million in funds to support prostate cancer research and men’s health programmes globally. So, let's start growing!

In its third year, the Movember campaign finds its roots in all things Singaporean, celebrating the spirit of familiarity and national identity through a movement run by locals, for locals.

Movember

Movember is here! Nope, I didn't spell wrongly. It is a term that's derived from Moustache and November. And for the first time, this November, Singapore Cancer Society is set to change the way we view men's health, in particular cancer.

Then, it was photo time. Photo taken with Dr. Ang and the ladies present that day. We can't grow mustache, so why not stick one on?

There was a little "shave-off" challenge. Why shave off now? Well, for a clean start!

Guys! Go start growing a mustache too!

Cancer is the number one cause of  death in Singapore. Each year about 4,800 men are diagnosed with cancer and about 4,500 die from it (Stats taken from Singapore Cancer Registry Interim Report 2005-2009). The number of new cases among men is also on the rise and studies have shown that men are more likely to die of cancer than women. 

In addition, the number of new cancer cases among men is rising year-on-year. Through movember.Sg, SCS aims to address this worrying trend by increasing the awareness of cancer among men and highlighting cancer signs and symptoms.

Central to movember.Sg is the moustache. Supporters of movember.Sg are encouraged to grow a moustache during the month of November. The moustache becomes a talking point that creates opportunities for movember.Sg supporters to talk about men's health issues, especially men's cancers, and raise funds for the cancer cause.

So grow a moustache today (or wear a fake one) and get your colleagues, friends and the men in your life to pay greater attention to their health and to cancer in particular.

There are two ways on how you can participate:
    • Give-Mo
    • Do-Mo

To Give-Mo, you can:

1. Donate to the SCS donation portal via SG Gives 
2. Send SCS a cheque or download the donation form 
3. Send SCS a completed GIRO form to donate. Donations are automatically deducted from your bank account on a regular basis. 

To Do-Mo, you can register as:
    1. Individual
    2. Team
    3. Corporate

Do(ing)-Mo brings many benefits to you as an individual, a team and or an organisation. From a personal sense of self-satisfaction, team building and an understanding of the health risks that men face, there is a myriad of reasons for supporting movember.Sg. 

We hope that you will join us and Do-Mo to raise funds for SCS and increase awareness of the major cancers affecting men. Your participation will be a boost to the campaign and will go a long way towards supporting the cancer cause and needy patients in their battle against cancer.
