Be Early To Get The Limited Edition 'SG50 x DEPRESSION' T-Shirts ~~~

Hi Huneybees,

Ready for SG50? If you are looking for something to wear this August, why not take a look at Singapore fashion label - DEPRESSION commemorative T-shirt collection titled 'SG50 x DEPRESSION'

The challenge?  To design 50 different limited edition t-shirts to celebrate Singapore's 50th Birthday. From pop art to street wear, the team spent 1 year to research and created these special Singaporean designs that will resonate with every single of us.  There's even 3 special Mr. Lee Kuan Yew tribute pieces!

"Lee Kuan Yew is the founding father of Modern Singapore and the only man I'll ever respect. It is our honor to be able to pay tribute to him through art and fashion" --- Kenny Lim, designer of Depression
“We are very proud to call Singapore home, and in fact, Kenny and I were there to brave the rain during the final send off. One of the designs is dedicated to that Sunday. And I also hope this collection will give Singaporeans and foreigners living here a better appreciation and understanding of our culture” --- Andrew Loh, designer of Depression

The entire DEPRESSION team (including the design, retail and merchandising departments) has come together for the first time to contribute their ideas to keep it uniquely Singaporean. Do look out for some of the designers’ favorite pieces like the quirky ‘I Love Laksa’, ‘Heartlander’ and ‘Lorong Lew Lian’!

But here's the catch, there is only 1 piece for each design is available only in one piece! You have got to be early to grab the design that you fancy. These t-shirts will be retailing at at S$89 each and will be available from July at SECTS SHOP located at Orchard Gateway.

[Contest] Learn How To Cook Heritage Meals With Food Playground & Ayam Brand

Hi Huneybees,

Here's an invitation for you to experience a fun hands-on cooking session cooking our local heritage meals - Laksa, Chicken Satay and Kueh Dadar with Food Playground on August 24th 2013. Read on for more details and my experience at the workshop...

Well, ever since I've gotten married, I've been cooking more and more. Something different everyday is what I am looking for, in search of new recipes, picking up new skills as I go. So, I jumped at the chance to learn how to cook heritage meals like - Laksa, Satay and Kueh Dadar.

Last week, I was at Food Playground (4A Craig Road) for a morning fun of cooking with a group of bloggers. We were treated to cookies from France and Lemongrass Lemonade from UK. It was like as though they knew I just came back from there. Hehehehe....

So, while waiting for everyone to arrive, I also did a little doodle on my chef hat and this is it...

As you know, our nation’s 48th birthday day is approaching and we start to think of things that make Singapore truly unique. How a small red dot on the map that was once an undeveloped country has become one of the top business hubs in the world within several decades remains a talking point for many.

What makes us special can be traced to our multi-racial culture and food heritage; Chinese, Malays, Indians, Peranakans and the Eurasians. The heritage food plays a significant role, binding people of different cultures together.

Being able to enjoy a wide range of food from different racial groups in one city, it is no wonder Singaporeans love their food. There is just something about our local heritage foods that tugs at heartstrings no matter how far we may be from home.

However, alot of us, know how to appreciate the food, but never have to time and skill to know how to prepare them. That is why Ayam Brand has paired up with Food Playground for this amazing cooking session.

Are you ready? Let's head into the kitchen then!

The kitchen was pretty spacious, just nice for around 20 people to move in and out and what's more is that it is air-conditioned! We started out with a short presentation by the instructor before we were given our ingredients to do our hands-on classes...

There was quite a bit of spices involved...

We split into our groups and I was happy to be able to be with a group of friends. We already knew each other, so it was easier to work with them. However, I ended up in tears from cutting the onions and Clarence teared up from pounding them. We were making the satay sauce. Sob Sob...

Oven baked chicken.
Topped with Satay Sauce! Perfect match!
At Food Playground, they chose to stick to the Mortar and Pestle instead of a grinder to retain the heritage feel. Here's what they say about that...

"We chose the Mortar and Pestle to represent the very essence of Food Playground - The engaging and fun hands-on nature of the cooking process. We would like all who come to Food Playground to view cooking not just a chore to "get over and be through with", instead, we believe that the cooking process itself can be a highly stimulating, interactive and an enjoyable process.
The Mortar and Pestle represents an age-old way to really connect to our food, we simply cannot find a more appropriate symbol to represent our values - The passion to preserve the food culture and heritage in Singapore."
So, whilst Clarence and I prepared for the Chicken Satay, Xue Ling and Rachel prepared the Laksa.

That's our Laksa!
The last dish was Kueh Dadar, which is like a coconut based dessert and we all had out fun making it, doing the crepe and definitely the rolling fun of wrapping it. We would have done more, but it's just that, we can't resist making them and eating them on the spot! Wahahahaha!

After the cooking session, we all sat down at the "living room" area to eat what we have cooked. It was such a touching moment, I have teared up so much while cutting the onions and it was rewarding to taste the food that I've cooked. Super fulfilling day!

Well, if you want the faster way and probably one way that doesn't make you tear up, you can check out the curry paste that Ayam Brand carries...

My Grandma's Favourite OWL Coffee Has A Cafe Now!!!

Hi Huneybees,

Since 1956, OWL Coffee began its Straits Asian Coffee legacy. Through the years, OWL has been with us and available in convenient sachets and packages. My grandma has been a huge fan of OWL Coffee, even till today, she insists in her morning cup of thick, strong Kopi O.

Yipee! And now OWL has a Café! We can get specially brewed OWL Coffee right at OWL Café @ The Star Vista. Just a stone's throw away from Buona Vista MRT, the new baby of OWL is so convenient and refreshing.

Stepping into the Cafe, reminds me of my days working at a coffee place. The strong aroma welcomed me in and seriously, I'm so addicted to it, I couldn't bear to leave! Trust me!

And if there's beautiful weather of even at nights under the beautiful moonlight, you can choose the alfresco dining area...

NO! 3-in-1 coffee is not served here even though you can purchase them off the rack. Every cup of coffee is freshly brewed and they are flavours you can't find in their packaged coffee.

Interesting must try coffees would be the Gula Melaka Kopi (sweet!) as well as the rare, 100% authentic Kopi Luwak (Civet Coffee served with Coffee Caviar). Take your time to savour the coffees!

My Kopi Luwak came specially served in a tray and glass dome. Slowly open up and breath deeply for the strong aroma of the coffee. It's really like the cartoons where the smoke comes out drawing you close...

Coffee Caviar! I would say, don't start pouring everything into the coffee. Have a sip and the scoop a couple to go with it. That's how you can taste the wonderful coffee blend!

Hae Chor Salad with Oriental Dressing

Not just coffee, delicious food is also served here. If you are looking for an affordable place to chill out with your friends or looking for something special to eat, come find it all at OWL Café! The dishes are specially thought out by the chef and they all have the

Spaghetti with Laksa Sauce
I would recommend starting off your meal with a salad and the interesting thing here is that the salad is served with Hae Chor (Prawn Roll). The portion is pretty big and filling, so be sure to share it!

Assam Mango Chicken with Nasi Kuning
Assam Chicken Wings
Don't miss out trying the high recommended Assam Chicken Wings or Assam Mango Chicken with Nasi Kuning too! They are slightly spicy dishes, but I'll say the burning's worth it! The taste is so authentic and you won't be able to find it elsewhere.

Have a cup of Calamansi Freeze or Soursop Freeze to "cool down".

If you are not too hungry or just looking for some bites during tea time, you can have the Otak-Otak (Spicy Fish Cake) Toast or Roti Bakar Assam Nanas (Tamarind Sauce Topped With Ham & Pineapple Slices).

What's amazing is that this is not your usual bread toast, no thick toast etc. It's actually Ciabatta Bread! My favourite Italian bread that's soft and fluffy on the inside and there's a thin layer of flour on the outside. The slight spiciness of the ingredients bring out the flavour and they both enhance each other's taste.

DESSERT Time!!!

Glory Hitam and Durian Pengat
Choose from the smooth silky beancurd or the fusion dessert that we are familiar with - Glory Hitam (Cold Pulau Hitam), Chendol (With Jackfruit Slices) or the orgasmic Durian Pengat! My high recommendation goes to the Durian Pengat, but be sure to share it and check the availability of the desserts as they run out pretty fast!

Front: Chendol (with jackfruit slices)
So gather your friends and head on over for a "Nanyang" time!
