Hiroshi Sugimoto — Form is Emptiness: An Art Experience That Slows Time

Hi Huneybees,

Hiroshi Sugimoto, Brush Impression, Heart Sutra, 2023, 288 unique gelatine silver calligraphy prints, 49.5 x 59.7 xm each. (Image Credit: Lisson Gallery.)

If you’re craving something a little slower, quieter… and honestly quite soul-resetting, this one’s for you...

Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form is Emptiness is the first major solo exhibition in Southeast Asia dedicated to the iconic Japanese artist, and it’s not your typical walk-through gallery experience.

The exhibition is inspired by the Buddhist cosmological concept of the Five Elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void, and unfolds in a loop, almost like you’re stepping into a quiet cycle of life itself. This elemental framework reflects Sugimoto’s enduring inquiry into time, perception, and the structure of reality It’s less about rushing through artworks, and more about… feeling the artworks.

Across more than 60 works spanning five decades, you’ll see Sugimoto’s signature seascapes, striking architectural photography, and immersive installations. Everything feels minimal, almost still; but at the same time, deeply thought-provoking.

Form is Emptiness  gently forces you to slow down. To notice. To reflect and how, through Sugimoto’s lens, the material world becomes a mirror for the mind.

This isn’t just an art exhibition—it’s a pause button in the middle of your busy life, that's perfect for quiet solo dates, artsy couple days, or when you just need a mental reset. Keep the dates marked and below are more details...

Hi Huneybees,

If you are into pork, especially Iberico pork, which is the world's best and healthiest pork, I would highly recommend you try Gochi-So Shokudo.

Enjoying premium pork doesn't necessarily mean having to splurge on an overpriced menu.
We can all experience the original flavor of Iberico pork, enhanced by the use of the finest grade charcoal, coupled with special dipping sauces for a perfect combination at Gochi-So Shokudo!

Operates as your daily casual Japanese restaurant specializing in affordable Iberico Pork dishes, Gochi-So Shokudo has recently announced the launch of its Truffle Fair from 1 November to 14 December 2022, as well as the Festive Creations, available from 7 Nov 2022 to 1 Jan 2023.

Truffle Fair (Available from 1 Nov to 14 Dec 2022)

During the limited offering of the new Truffle Fair, Huneybees can enjoy tantalizing truffle-themed creations of Truffle Cheese Mille Feuille Katsu and Truffle Chestnut Pork Jowl Don

Truffle Cheese Mille Feuille Katsu Set

When the Truffle Cheese Mille Feuille Katsu set was served to me, I could not stop but finished eating the moment I sunk my teeth into those crispy pork katsu as each piece was so inviting, thanks to the great combination of the creamy goodness of King Oyster & Button mushrooms with cheddar cheese filling that simply oozed out in my mouth while chewing the truffle tasted pork!

Priced at just SGD18.90++, this mouth-watering creation is topped with parmesan cheese and served with a refreshing shredded cabbage salad, is definitely a MUST-TRY!!

Really enjoyed the slight twist to the traditional flavor of the Tonkatsu with the NEW Truffle Cheese Mille Feuille Katsu.

Truffle Chestnut Pork Jowl Don

For Huneybees who prefer to go for something light, you can opt for the Truffle Chestnut Pork Jowl Don to savour the comforting and wholesome goodness of premium pork jowl that is lightly grilled over Japanese Binchotan charcoal. The don includes a good portion of delightful mushrooms, onsen tamago, and rice. Priced at $12.90++,  I can imagine this being the crowd favorite during its limited launch period!

Festive Creations (Available from 7 Nov 2022 to 1 Jan 2023)

Calling all ribs lovers, you can now have the best of east and west at Gochi-So Shokudo with its new Festive Creations!

Smoked Iberico BBQ Spare Ribs

The main star of the Festive Creations is the Smoked Iberico BBQ Spare Ribs served with a hearty serving of fries and salads.

Marinated with Japanese soya sauce, sugar, mirin and sake, sous vide, and smoked with beechwood, these succulent and juicy ribs definitely deserve a Perfect 10 in my opinion with the special dressing that is prepared with tomato ketchup, mixed herbs, fresh tomato, BBQ and a secret home-made sauce!
Priced at $23.90++, these perfect finger-licking good BBQ spare ribs are ideal for 2 pax.

 The Smoked Iberico Finger Ribs

The Smoked Iberico Finger Ribs are tender and flavourful with a smoky, earthy flavour.

For Huneybees who do not want to dirty their fingers, the Smoked Iberico Finger Ribs Don is just the right dish for you. This great creation is not only an ideal festive dish for those who enjoy having their ribs with rice but more specifically for pork lovers who love the tender, boneless strip of rib chops like me! Priced at $12.90++,  Smoked Iberico Finger Ribs Don is my ideal comfort (pork) food.

Apart from the new Truffle and Festive-flavoured options, Gochi-So Shokudo will continue to serve dishes on their regular à la carte menu including the signature Iberico Pork Jowl Don ($13.50++) that features thin slices of pork cheeks over a bed of fluffy Japanese pearl rice. Sweet-savoury sauce is drizzled on the pork jowl don to elevate the flavour of the pork.

Iberico Secreto (Black Char Siew) - $9.80++ for 6 pieces (available on the regular a la carte menu)
Grilled to perfection, it has a succulent texture with a delightful mix of sweet and smoky flavours.

For Huneybees who demand the best, Gochi-So Shokudo also serves Bellota Grade Iberico Pork, which is an even higher quality grade of Iberico Pork. Be sure to try the melt-in-your-mouth Bellota Iberico pork with the Bellota Loin Katsu & Cheese Katsu. The meat is tender and juicier than regular Iberico pork. Fresh Japanese panko breadcrumbs are used to bring out the light and crispy exterior while keeping the meat moist and tender. The dish also features a deep-fried Iberico collar wrapped in cheese. Be sure to dip the pork into the Tonkatsu sauce for an elevated taste.

Do you know that Black Iberian pigs are also known as an olive walking tree?  These pigs, whose origin traces back to the New Stone Age, feed naturally on grasses, roots, herbs, and most importantly acorns that explains why Iberico pork is one of the highest-quality pork available worldwide and has a concentration of oleic acids which have a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels!

Gochi-So Shokudo imports its pork from Spain and delivers it directly to the outlets.

Do remember to try both the Truffle Fair and the Festive Creations, while they last, at one of the 14 Gochi-So Shokudo outlets islandwide:

Try Inaniwa Udon At Kiyoshi Japanese Restaurant

| |
0 comments
Hi Huneybees,

You've been working hard and it's time to treat yourself to a good meal this weekend. If Japanese cuisine is what you are craving, here's a recommendation.

Located in the heart of the CBD area, along Amoy Street, is the Kiyoshi Japanese Restaurant. It is a  relatively new (launched in April 2020) family-style restaurant specializing in Inaniwa Udon, yakitori, sushi, and affordable bento sets.

Keeping true to its name - Kiyoshi 清 meaning "pure" in Japanese, the restaurant is a refreshing take as you step into its brightly lit interior. One feels homely and comfortable to dine in, with a few Instagram worthy spots for your wefies while waiting for your food to be served. The restaurant has taken all the safety precautions from Covid, so you can dine in peace...

There's even a LIVE sushi bar for you to see the chef in action.

Hungry already? Let's start with some Yakitori.

We had Asparagus wrapped with pork, chicken, pork balls as well as beef. I liked that the meat is lightly marinated, not overpowered with teriyaki sauce, so you can still taste the light freshness of the meat with a little smokey touch.

The restaurant specializes in Inaniwa udon, a type of udon made in the Inaniwa area of Inakawa machi, Akita prefecture. This cream-colored udon is hand-stretched and is slightly thinner than regular udon, yet thicker than sōmen, or hiyamugi noodles. The most important part of the making process is the repeated hand-kneading technique which helps it to achieve its thin, smooth, and delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

The restaurant serves many different styles of udon dishes - Kiyoshi Combination Udon (comprising three kinds of Japanese cold noodles including Ikura Salmon Udon, Tempura Udon, and Nebaneba Udon), Aburi Salmon Salad Udon, Tempura Oroshi Udon, Tem Chirashi Udon, Beef Onsen Udon, Prawn Udon, etc.

For me, I think the TEM Chirashi Udon is a must-try dish. The thin udon is served cold with assorted tempura (scallop, mushroom, avocado, and capsicum), topped with a soft boiled egg and seaweed strips. It's not only a colorful visual presentation, it is also an interesting play on textures. You get the crispy bites from the tempura and then the soft silkiness of the udon mixed with the egg yolk, I've not had udon this way before and I think it makes a good summer dish.

Another dish that left an impression on us was the Kiyoshi Nabe Mono. We had it with the Dashi Soup Base, which complemented very well with the fresh vegetables and brought out the freshness of the meat - Hokkaido Pork. There's other meat selection and add ons too - A4 Wagyu, US Beef, Tsukune & Satsuma age.

What's special was when you are finished with the Nabe Mono, cooked rice and an egg are added into the soup. The waiter will help with this part, stirring in the pot slowly until the soup is absorbed and the dish becomes a pot of yummilicious congee.

You can add in the provided spring onion and seaweed strips to taste or opt for their specialty udon instead of rice, for a nice bowl of warm udon to end the dinner.

So, these are some of my recommended dishes for you to try out at Kiyoshi, of course, there are still the usual known Japanese dishes like sashimi, donburi, ramen and bento sets, waiting for you to enjoy. Cheers to a wonderful meal and have a great weekend! 😀

5 Things To Prepare For STGCC 2015 Tomorrow

| |
Hi Huneybees,

Are you all set for STGCC tomorrow? I can't be there as I'm currently overseas, but from my past experience, here's something to share with you and get you prepared for tomorrow...

1) Better plan your route and know where your targets are before stepping into the grounds. This is the show floor map and be sure to grab a copy of the STGCC 2015 Programme Guide before you enter the convention hall to note down stage sessions & signings  you want to attend and do check out the STGCC Lucky Draw Kiosk!

2) Every year, you get limited, exclusive and new products at STGCC and 95% of the time, the items are only available in a very limited run. This year, there is even a special site where talented artists residing in Singapore will be presenting an array of memorabilia in celebration of Singapore's Golden Jubilee -  exclusive SG50 custom Munnies by Tell Your Children, Keh Choon Wee, Ong Ean Keat of Keatopia, Mas of Wanton Noodle, Ziqi of Monster Little and Caramelaw A.K.A Sheena Aw will be available for bidding at a silent auction at STGCC, where all proceeds raised will go to child welfare organisation, Club Rainbow. Other Exclusives & New Products list, click on the link...

3) There's gona be tons of photo opportunities at STGCC and you would want to be capturing these precious moments - the gargantuan Hulk vs Hulkbuster installation, 1000% Jiang Shi BE@RBRICK guarded by an army of 100% clones, selfies with your 'idols' at the Walk of Fame & the inaugural STGCC Championships of Cosplay, the lists goes on. So, you better be charging all your power banks tonight and bring them along to ensure you're always on 100% phone battery life!

4) And if you are looking to meet your idols at the Walk of Fame, you better be bringing the canvas boards, posters or related merchandises to get them autographed. Don't think the artists will be happy if you were to be appearing with tissue paper... =P

5) Ok, last but not least, to ensure that you get the things that you want, you better be sleeping soon so that you can be there when the doors open on Saturday morning at 10am!
