DAY 3 of inaugural Sing Jazz 2014 (Part 2/2)

| |
Hi Huneybees,

I'm back to share the second part of  the Day 3 of the inaugural Singapore International Jazz Festival 2014 (Sing Jazz 2014)!

@8:55PM: James Morrison
Many people who are unfamiliar with Jazz might have mistaken the identity of the multi-instrumental Australian jazz musician from the more popular British pop star James Morrison, who share the same name.

I was amazed by how good James Morrison is with the trumpet!
Widely known for his trumpet playing, James (Lloyd) Morrison, also played many instruments such as saxophones, clarinet, flugelhorn, tromboneeuphonium, tuba, double bass, guitar and piano
James Morrison gave the audience a truly brilliant exhibition of classic instrumental jazz at its best!

The multi-instrumental playing Australian showed the audience how good he was in playing and switching between instruments; this time with a trombone

@10:30PM: India Arie
Probably the most recognizable name in the Day 3 of Sing Jazz 2014, India Arie is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. She has sold over 3.3 million records in the US and 10 million worldwide according to Wikipedia.

The Soul Jazz Grammy Award winner India Arie!

India Arie praised the audience for giving her the overwhelming support and hence energy for her performance

Wearing her mother-made white dress, India Arie not only displayed such a strong vocal performance of soul jazz but her confidence as well when she threw her head dress away during a number.

A demonstration of confidence without the head dress!

An excellent vocal performance of Soul Jazz by India Arie and her back-up singers

Overall the evening has been a excellent mixed of Jazz performance and certainly a great introduction to someone, like me, who has little exposure to Jazz music before.

DAY 3 of inaugural Sing Jazz 2014 (Part 1/2) UPDATED

| |
Hi Huneybees,

·     Day 3 of the  inaugural Singapore International Jazz Festival featured a strong cast, which included JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET, ALLEN STONE, JAMES MORRISON, and INDIA ARIE.

@6:30PM: James Taylor Quartet
First to step on the stage is the British four-piece jazz funk band, James Taylor Quartet, who have became renowned for their live performances.

The brand had Avon Daniel as the guest singer who added more funkiness to a great jazz opener for the evening. It was certainly very unfortunate that an encore request from the crowd could not be given due to the schedule of the event. Hopefully we will see more of James Taylor Quartet soon!

A great performance that really warmed up the audience for the evening

Avon Daniel's vocal added the extra funkiness to the already excellent performance by the James Taylor Quartet

@7:45PM: Allen Stone
Allen Stone may not be a household name yet but he certainly did gathered a strong following in Singapore from the reaction of the crowd when he came on stage.

This self-proclaimed  "hippie with soul" singer and songwriter, certainly lived up to his name with his hippie tunes and wild moves throughout his performance. By the end of his performance, Allen Stone surely has made many new fans from the crowd reaction he received at the end of his last song.

Do stay tune for the second part of the Day 3 coverage of the Sing Jazz 2014 on James Morrison and India Arie.
Meantime do checkout the rehearsal and Meet&Greet blog post with Allen Stone that afternoon!
Good night for now.

The Singapore International Jazz Festival 2014 (‘Sing Jazz’), a celebration of jazz music at its most diverse and enduring, is set to kick off 27 February through 2 March 2014 at Marina Bay Sands.

Featuring jazz and R&B legends Jamie Cullum, Natalie Cole, James Morrison, India Arie and Incognito, together with upcoming international stars such as Gregory Porter, Allen Stone and Dirty Loops, all performing alongside a host of regional and local jazz icons, the likes of Glenn Fredly, Jeremy Monteiro, Melissa Tham and Alemay Fernandez, Sing Jazz is slated to be Singapore’s largest ever jazz and jazz-influenced music festival.

Organised by Orbis Festival Productions, in partnership with Marina Bay Sands (the Official Venue Partner) and the Java International Jazz Festival (‘Java Jazz’), Sing Jazz is set to invigorate the local jazz and music scene, boosting the following for this most creative and inspiring of live music forms, while at the same time helping to nurture and encourage the development of home-grown jazz talent.

The Festival kicks off with Jamie Cullum headlining an opening gala performance on 27 February at the Grand Theatre. This will be followed by three days of back-to-back performances by some of the biggest names in jazz and R&B, at the main stage of the outdoor Event Plaza. Meanwhile, satellite stages situated throughout the destination will showcase the wealth of regional and local talent, and provide the opportunity for jamming late into the night, so capturing the true essence of live jazz.

The Festival also takes seriously its social and developmental mission of nurturing emerging jazz talent in Singapore and the region. Sing Jazz will host clinics led by Festival artists, and facilitate an exchange of local talent with its counterpart festival, Java Jazz. It will also pledge $1 from each commercial ticket sale towards the Foundation of Arts & Social Enterprise’s on-going training and grooming of our cadre of up-and-coming jazz musicians. Moreover, Orbis Festival Productions is committed to founding a residential ‘Jazz Academy’ that will see leading exponents of the art tutoring and mentoring aspiring young jazz artists.

Tickets for Sing Jazz will be on sale from Saturday, 30 November 2013. Audiences will be treated to a concert at Marina Bay Sands Grand Theatre on 29 November by British acid jazz icons Incognito, who will also return to perform among the other award-winning artists on the stages of Sing Jazz 2014 in February.
