Step Into the Life of Frida Kahlo At the ArtScience Museum: Frida Forever

Hi Huneybees,

Frida Kahlo, the iconic Mexican artist, is universally recognized as one of the most influential female artists of the 20th century. Famous for her powerful self-portraits, Kahlo’s work explores themes of identity, the human body, and her remarkable resilience in the face of personal challenges.

In tribute to her enduring legacy, ArtScience Museum presents Frida Forever, a special exhibition running until September 1, 2024. This showcase is part of the museum's "Year of Extraordinary Women," celebrating Kahlo and other remarkable women throughout the year.

The exhibition is divided into three engaging segments - Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, Bare: Frida's Inner World, and an immersive VR experience - Exquisite Corpse, to complete the journey. Rather than focusing solely on her art, the spotlight shifts to explore her life in depth: her childhood, inspirations, motifs, iconic dresses, medical history, and even her trauma. Adding to the allure, the exhibition features works never before seen outside the United States, offering visitors a rare and unique experience.

Produced by Layers of Reality and the Frida Kahlo Corporation, the first segment, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, immerses visitors in Kahlo's life story through cutting-edge technology. Spanning eight thematic spaces, the exhibition features photographs, films, 360-degree projections, interactive installations, and multi-layered technology to trace her journey from childhood to the life-altering accident that shaped her path as an iconic artist. This segment also delves into Kahlo’s other passions beyond painting, such as her political activism and romantic relationships.

Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon

The exhibition opens with a strikingly designed altar dedicated to Frida Kahlo, reflecting the Mexican tradition of honoring life after death. While this might seem a bit morbid to some Asian audiences, it feels fitting and respectful as a prelude to exploring her life and legacy.

As we move further into the exhibition, a stunning garden scene unfolds - The Garden of Love, featured for the first time, is inspired by Frida Kahlo’s own garden at the Blue House. This section highlights Frida's deep love for nature, showcasing her surrounded by flowers, plants, and animals. The vibrant, Mexican-inspired garden brims with images of her in her botanical world. Here, you can also participate in a special program by adding your own love wishes to the garden, contributing to its ever-growing beauty.

The Accident segment highlights a pivotal moment in Frida's life—the near-fatal accident that shattered her body but ignited her passion for painting. This multimedia installation employs innovative multi-layer technology, using overlapping projections to create a stunning three-dimensional effect that immerses visitors in her experience. You can almost feel the depth of her pain as you witness this transformative chapter of her life.

Standing before the multimedia installation, The Dream, as it slowly unfolds, is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit. This artwork reflects the period when Frida Kahlo was bedridden, during which she created many of her most significant pieces. Through intricate projection mapping and an AI algorithm inspired by her work, the installation beautifully portrays themes of life, death, health, and illness, encapsulating the complexities of her experiences.

There's an interactive area where you can discover iconic symbols and motifs that frequently appear in Frida's art, like the monkey, sugar skull, pineapples, and flowers. The Endless Symbology section is perfect for capturing some Instagram-worthy photos or TikTok videos.

At La Rosita, you can sit down and color your own portrait of Frida Kahlo, drawing inspiration from her famous self-portraits. This experience recreates the moments when Frida would paint with her students along the vibrant streets of Mexico. Once finished, you can scan your artwork and watch it come to life as an animated projection on a large screen.

The seventh themed space is dedicated to Frida Kahlo's global travels and the influential people she met along the way. This colorful section highlights her journeys from Mexico to cultural centers like New York and Paris, where she connected with famed artists like Marcel Duchamp. Visitors can fully immerse themselves in her story through an impressive 360-degree digital projection of photographs, animations, and graphics, creating a continuous loop of her remarkable history.

The Fashion Icon segment offers a rare chance to get up close and personal with Frida Kahlo's iconic garments, on loan from the Frida Kahlo Corporation. This display highlights her vibrant, traditional weavings and showcases how deeply she embraced her culture and love for color. Her fashion continues to transcend generations, leaving a lasting impact on the world of style.

Bare: Frida's Inner World

The second exhibition, Bare: Frida's Inner World, delves deeper into Kahlo's personal and medical struggles. With the support of her great niece, Cristina Kahlo Alcalá, and fashion curator Circe Henestrosa, this segment offers a revealing look at her complex health journey. It highlights her time at the American British Cowdray Hospital in Mexico, featuring medical records, photographs, and even an X-ray of her spine taken just three months before her passing on July 13, 1954.

Visitors can also examine clinical datasheets detailing her health leading up to her final major surgery in 1953, when her lower right leg was amputated due to gangrene. Taking it a step further, a team of medical experts from Singapore—including an orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, and clinical psychologist—were invited to provide modern-day insights. Their analysis brings new understanding to the physical and emotional pain Kahlo endured, offering a fresh perspective on her life and resilience.

Exquisite Corpse

Conclude your visit to Frida Forever by heading to the VR gallery on Level 4 for the final segment, Exquisite Corpse, created by Layers of Reality and Blit Studios. Immerse yourself in a virtual reality experience that explores the rich and imaginative world of Frida Kahlo's mind. Step inside her home and enter the intimate space of her bed, where she spent countless hours recovering. From there, embark on a captivating nine-minute journey through vivid, dreamlike landscapes inspired by her iconic artworks.

After walking through the Frida Forever exhibition, I’m left in awe of Frida Kahlo’s enduring spirit, her resilience, and the profound depth of her life story. Each segment, from the intimate glimpses into her personal struggles to the vibrant exploration of her artistic world, reveals a woman who channeled immense pain into stunning works of art. Her legacy has been so beautifully preserved, allowing us to connect not just with her art but with her as a person. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit, and I leave feeling inspired by her courage, creativity, and timeless impact.

Come talk a walk into Frida's life at Frida Forever.

LUX Aims to Change Feminine Identity With 'In Her Name’ to Celebrate Its 100 Years Anniversary

Hi Huneybees,

LUX, the renowned beauty brand under Unilever, is thrilled to unveil its latest campaign, 'In Her Name', in celebration of its 100th anniversary. This initiative aims to empower women by addressing and overcoming sexist stereotypes associated with their names. With a vision to reshape societal perceptions for future generations, the campaign sheds light on the unconscious bias prevalent in the naming of children in China.
Traditionally, certain names chosen for children reinforce gender stereotypes, with girls often receiving names like "Quiet" and "Small" to signify perceived traits of demure femininity, while boys are given names like "Strong" and "Victory" to convey notions of dominance. Through interviews with women from diverse backgrounds, firsthand experiences revealed how societal norms surrounding names can impact their identities, leading to unfair treatment and unrealized potential.
The 'In Her Name' campaign by LUX seeks to revolutionize the naming conventions for women by introducing 100 names that embody the essence of femininity in contemporary society. Drawing inspiration from classical literature, positive associations, and the evolving landscape of societal progress, LUX has collaborated with Dr. Liu Yanchun, a distinguished linguistics scholar from the University of China, to spearhead a movement challenging societal norms and stereotypes. This collaboration ensures a meticulous selection process, offering unbiased options that showcase the diverse spectrum of femininity and promote inclusivity.

"In the process of creating these 100 new names, I've combined elements from literature, researched terms with positive connotations, and took into account present societal norms to craft meaningful names for the women of today." --- Dr. Liu Yanchun

LUX also collaborated with digital artists to showcase each selected name through visually stunning illustrations, with a unique design for every name, enhancing the experience of choosing a name and celebrating the beauty of femininity. The unveiling of the 100 new names has taken place on social platforms Little Red Book, Weibo and Douyin. Women from all walks of life could choose new names for themselves that best represent their spirit and character.

Marco Versolato, Chief Creative Officer - Unilever at VML Singapore, who spearheaded the campaign, commented, "The 'In Her Name' campaign represents a shift in how we perceive and celebrate femininity. By reimagining the power of language and visual representation, we have the opportunity to challenge stereotypes and create a more inclusive future for women worldwide." The impact of the 'In Her Name' campaign extends far beyond naming conventions, reflecting LUX's commitment to championing diversity, inclusivity, and gender equality. So, if you could change your name, what would it be? Join LUX in the 'In Her Name' campaign and be part of a movement celebrating the beauty, strength, and resilience of women everywhere~!

Hi Huneybees,

Asian global C-pop star, actress and fashion icon Tia Lee 李毓芬 has been laying a low profile in the recent 3 years. Back on 7 November 2022, she shockingly deleted all her posts on IG, and uploaded a mysterious black six-square-grid with a dark-blue strike through the middle, replacing her profile icon with a broken tiara, leaving her fans baffled and sparking widespread speculation about her next move.

Luckily she didn't keep us waiting for too long. A pilot episode of an animation series was introduced telling Tia's journey and her struggles in the entertainment and fashion industry. This was released as part of a 6 ep cinematic animation series alongside another 6 innovative motion images series as prelude to her new song “Goodbye Princess”.

The animation series centered around the underlying message of Female Empowerment for all females to become stronger by embracing their true selves, breaking out of stereotypes, shaking off biases, avoid negativityEach 30-second episode takes inspiration from a classic "princess" fairy tale, subverting the symbols and images in it, to form a story that is both full of imagination and saturated with the ideas of metamorphosis.

Each episode will be further illustrated and expounded upon by a thematic poster that sums up the theme and message that Tia wishes to communicate through each animated episode. The cinematic design of the 6 posters will echo one another and will be released on Tia's social platforms the day after the release of each animation.

Innovatively, a motion image and photographs of Tia will also be released after each episode to reinforce the story that Tia wishes to tell. Featuring Tia, the imagery of the photography and motion images aims to create a strong contrast between animation and reality.

The series has already been launched till episode 5 and you can catch them all here -https://www.youtube.com/@tialeeofficial/videos

Forever Crazy: Celebrating The Beauty Of The Female Form

| |
Hi Huneybees,

ATTEN-TION!

Forever Crazy started off with 12 gorgeous topless ladies marching out into the stage in high boots, Bearskin hats, and pound symbol suspenders, saluting and greeting their audiences in the Crazy Horse trademark opening show - "God Save Our Bare Skin".

Celebrating 65 years of Parisian glamour and inspired by the endless theme of feminity and sophistication, we are getting to see all the best acts from the legendary Cabaret. Forever Crazy, is a series of highly aesthetic and visual performances presented by a multicultural cast of 10 classically-trained dancers, dressed in textured lighting, projection, extravagant lingerie, body harness, and Christian Louboutins.

Forever Crazy was conceived in 1951 as a tribute to Alain Bernadin, the founder of Crazy Horse. It fully preserves the cabaret's artistic heritage while adding a touch of modernity, humour and sophistication.

Bernardin's vision for Crazy Horse Paris was to show the different facets of femininity - funny, cheeky, loving, rebellious, sophisticated - and highlight those with great showmanship through music, lights, projections, and costumes.

Yes, there is nudity, 80 minutes of beautifully toned bare breasts and buttocks. But trust me, throughout the show, there is nothing porn-ish; you will only learn to appreciate the beauty of the female body, understand the female sexiness, through the artistic content of the show, the lighting and projection cleverly matched with the dance numbers make every act an art piece I would love to have at home.

A lot of the acts hinges on the lighting effects that are only made possible where all the dancers are of the same height and build (auditions require measurements from nipple to nipple and navel to pubis). The criteria are very strict and out of the annually over 500 applications, only 2 or 3 gets selected.

After the dancers are picked, they have to start mastering the specific Crazy Horse Paris dances, get their costumes fitted, haircuts and colours decided with her stage name once she is ready for the stage.
Through every dance act, you can see these girls go through a strict routine as every girl looks almost identical; and dancing in a 6m x 2m x 3m stage frame is definitely not an easy feat. My favourite act has got to be the "Upside Down", where the ladies dance using mirror reflection, every pause moment is such a beautiful work of art, every girl, so confident, so comfortable, so beautiful in their own skin. I don't even know which ones to filter out, so here's a short gif above.

Each dance act is not related, but for comic relief and also time for stage changes, we have Mr Fantastic to keep us company. He is an American popping-style dancer who became famous on "So You Think You Can Dance".

He's voguing style of dance has definitely got us wondering about the beauty of the human body form. Actually, it would be nice if there were additionally shows of male dancers too, just to balance out the gender game...

Over the past 65 years, Crazy Horse Paris has drawn over 15 million patrons among them celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, President John F. Kennedy, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Jean Paul Gaultier, Pedro Almodovar, Sting, Beyoncé and Rihanna.
Since its inception, Crazy Horse Paris has acquired an impeccable reputation for presenting women in an incomparable, sensual and sophisticated way. It will be a pity to not catch the show...

Forever Crazy is playing at Grand Theatre, Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands till 22nd October 2017. Tickets are available at Sistic and the venue's box office, be sure to give the VIP Table a try for the best view too!
