Looking Back At The OUTSIDER Fashion Art Festival

October I call it the fashion month. With so many fashion shows and updates for the new season, there was so much to see, so much to change. But one that was memorable had got to be the OUTSIDER Fashion Art Festival that ran from October 20 - 22.

The location was unorthodox, not some grand hallways or ballroom, but in a hypermart - BigBox, in the suburban neighbourhood area - Jurong. Titled OUTSIDER, this anti-elitist fashion art festival features works from a range of young emerging fashion brands from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Thailand; 10 Singapore artists created visual art installations, plus 45 works created by fashion graduates from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). A total of 65 young Singaporean and Asian creatives being given a public platform to show off their talents!

OUTSIDER is organized by creative agency Untitled Collective, founded by Zachary Goh and together with Toby Hsu, they have over 17 years in the creative scenes in Singapore and China.

This first OUTSIDER event sees the team bringing fashion and art that’s not mainstream to the general public to create interesting conversations in the Heartlands of Singapore. It’s a passion project to spread the love for fashion and creativity across Asia and whether they profit from it is not on their top priority.

"Many fashion events are exclusive - if you can't secure an invitation or you are not in a certain clique of people, you wouldn't be able to attend. We wanted to do quite the opposite."

There was so many insta-worthy spots and the highlight has got to be the fashion show that features all 13 designers at the event. The brands included Singapore labels Faculty and Voltaire.Visions, plus Lanneret, Alias, Ms Yeeyee, 1=X and Mimblanche from China; Makin Jan Ma, Methodology and Absurd Laboratory from Hong Kong, Batice from Taiwan, Man Chien from Malaysia and Q Design and Play from Thailand. Iconic footwear brand Converse also celebrated its Chuck Taylor All Stars’ 100th year anniversary with an art installation space.

I'm definitely in love with this fresh new take on fashion and art. The fashion pieces will be breathing in new air for our wardrobes and hearing that Zachary and Toby are planning for this to be a yearly event,  I'm definitely looking forward to the new OUTSIDER event!

[Updated] An Alternative Portrait Exhibition With Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars

Today, Converse celebrated the iconic Chuck Taylor All Stars with a call out to all their loyal fans and wearers of their signature sneakers to gather at Bugis Junction to celebrate their love for their sneakers.

Earlier this month, Converse launched its Spring 2015 campaign dubbed “Made by you” and the campaign saw the Converse team scour the globe to collect beloved and distinctly personal Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers, each of which tells a story of transformation from blank canvas to self-portrait of their owner, each pair telling a different story of their owner's journey...

Everyone has a different story and each pair of shoes were "beautifully decorated" with a different wear and tear, each with a different background. It really took me down a memory trip through a different style of portrait exhibition. Maybe I should do the same for all my shoes? Wahahaha!

Fans brought their beloved well-worn Chucks to the "Made by you" photobooth for a snap. The shots of their sneakers were key to creating their sneaker portraits, which were completed with their signatures. After the portraits were printed out, they were framed and packaged in an exclusive “Made by you” carrier case.

I also had my pair of Chucks up for a portrait, it's a brand new pair, but I can't wait to have it along on my journeys. Wonder how it will turn out after a few years...

Colourful Converse All Star Sneakers for Spring 2014

On 26th February 2014, at Art Bar at The Butter Factory, Converse Inc. held a successful Sneakers Clash event for the media and guests to debut its Spring 2014 All Star collection featuring dynamic pops of colors and elevated silhouettes to provoke self-expression. 

Colourful tie-die prints, archive patterns and bold color create functional yet stylish looks perfect for Spring, the highlight of season was the release of the women’s double wedged Chuck Taylor All Star Platform Plus. 

The new Converse Spring/Summer 2014 All Star Collection launches globally February 2014.

During the event, media and guests experienced colours from the eyes of the Converse All Star as Art Bar was transformed by the showcases of the Chuck '70, Platform Plus and Tie-Dye collections.

The highlight of the evening was a Sneakers Clash art installation by urban artists Inkten and Clogtwo. The installation illustrated how colours have changed our lives – from mundane to exciting, from a grey to a vibrant world. Inkten and Clogtwo had picked out everyday boring items - namely an old door, a printer, a worn out office swivel chair, an old boxy TV and an unassuming traffic cone - and breathed a new life into them by giving them colours. The dull everyday items featured in the installation represents monotony – a world of grey. Using them as a blank canvas, the artists unleashed their creative expression to illustrate how colours can defy norm, and transform and clash against greyness.

Guests also participated in two interactive art activities that allowed them to express themselves with colours. One was an art wall that guests drew and wrote messages on and the other one involved them shooting paint on to plain Chucks mounted on the wall.
