Aren't You A Little KURIOS?

Hi Huneybees,

Ever wonder what happens when the clock strikes at the special 11.11 timing? Come step into the brand-new white-and grey Cirque du Soleil Big Top next to Marina Bay Sands to experience KURIOS - Cabinet of Curiosities, in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible.

Written and directed by Michel Laprise, the former show director of Madonna's MDNA, KURIOS brings us into the latter half of the nineteenth century, to utterly transformed our perception of the steampunk-themed reality.

Unveiling the brand-new white-and-grey Big Top as part of a global initiative at Cirque du Soleil to increasing efficiencies and reducing its carbon footprint wherever possible.  For the first time, Cirque du Soleil will be able to power the majority of the site via city power, and the new big top coloration assists in maintaining temperatures within the various tents which house the performance arena, hospitality, and artistic rehearsals.

Set in a story plot of an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (“The Seeker”) is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await.

Out of his curio cabinet steps an international cast of 47 artists from 17 countries, a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors, and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by energetic gypsy jazz, electro-swing soundtrack.

While we continue to applaud Cirque du Soleil for re-innovate street performance and circus art to mainstream and continue to fascinate but also remind us what the wonders of what the human body can do, KURIOS really sets itself apart from its peers with a whole new take on the usual circus acts by bringing them to another level!

One such is the Aerial Bicycle where an acrobat jumps on her acrobatic bicycle suspended in midair and hangs on in a variety of positions - on the handlebar stem or on the wheel, by a foot or by an arm. She even settles onto the seat, hands on the handlebars and feet on the pedals, playing with the bicycle fluently even riding it upside down! We would normally see this act where the acrobat would play in tandem with a hoop suspended in the air, with the act elevated and switching the prop into a bicycle, makes it even more dangerous.

Another act that left me and hubby in awe is the beautifully choreographed Upside Down World. A simple dinner affair amongst friends turned out to be a challenge to reach the chandelier above their heads. A chair balancing act turns into a poetic scenery as a parallel universe descends upside down
and both groups compete against each other through feats of ingenuity and daring to achieve their ends.

KURIOS is definitely an elevated show from any of the Cirque du Soleil shows that we have seen before, do catch them before they leave Singapore and don't forget to bring home some souvenirs before leaving...

The GREAT MOSCOW CIRCUS Was Breathtaking

Hi Huneybees,

Hold your breath as you step into the Red and White Big Top Tent next to Marina Bay Sands. It has been 10 years since The Great Moscow Circus was in town and now it has finally returned to Singapore and this time with more spectacular acts from more than 45 circus performers.

Although hubby and I have watched many circuses' acts over the years, we were still holding onto the edge of our seats throughout the show as we witnessed each act with excitement and astonishment.

"The Catwall Trampoline" was the first act and a great starter to the show. Five performers (four guys and one lady) executed many stylish but synchronized moves in perfection on/in/out of an erected platform via two trampolines, one on each side.

At some points during their performance, it seemed like the trampolines barely managed to prevent the performers from hitting the group by only a few inches before propelling the performers back to the platform! The end of the act was an amazing leg split landing on the platform by one of the male performers (ouch!).

Aerial silk is also one of those circuses' acts that we always enjoy watching. Under an intimate setting of dim lighting and shoulder to shoulder sitting, right in front of the circus ring, the sight of a well-toned body lifting a lengthy tall beauty effortlessly during "Flying high above the circus ring" act, mimicking the scene two lovebirds flying freely in the sky, was simply breathtaking for us but also gasping at the same time for the safety of the two aerialists as they flew back and forth by just a long fabric and without any safety arrest system underneath.

No circus is complete without some form of death-defying acts and The Great Moscow Circus is no different. However, The Great Moscow Circus takes acts like Space Wheel or The Giant Wheel and the Globe of Death, which are no strangers to circus audience, a step further by pushing the limits of these acts that we thought was already unbelievable!

Normally performed by a group of 2 performers, "The Giant Wheel" by The Great Moscow Circus was instead performed by two teams of two daredevils carrying out synchronized acrobatic running inside and outside two large rotating apparatus. Oh, our dear hearts were at gripping ends...

"The Globe of Deathby The Great Moscow Circus, on the other hand, normally involving three stunt riders, has four (4) motorcycles riding at an insane pace and directions inside a small mesh sphere ball that barely fits two riders.

All in all there were a total of 15 acts performed, we both agreed that our favourite was none other than the Contortionist - Emin AbdullaevAppearing in a small glass tank, I was first shocked to discover a head inside. But that was only the beginning, as he slowly "unfolds" himself and reveal his muscular physique out, the whole time I was squealing. His great performance has had again reminded me of how amazing we could do with our own body!

The Great Moscow Circus is certainly entertaining and raw. By raw, I meant you get to see how each apparatus is actually set up in-between the acts by the very performers who are going to use them. All the apparatus are taken down and set up with speed and care while the Ringmaster and his Russian Clowns act as covers to take attention off the preparation by amusing the audience with often silly acts.

It is because of this intimacy between the acts and the audience that makes The Great Moscow Circus so famous and it is worth the extra money to pay for the VIP or Premium seats in the house to fully enjoy the best views of all these breathtaking acts.

The Great Moscow Circus is located right beside Marina Bay Sands.
Don’t miss the circus of a lifetime!

Our Date Back In Time With Circus 1903

Hi Huneybees,

Last week, hubby and I were transported back to 1903, back to the days of decadence, grandeur, and romance when it was the Golden Age of Circus Acts. Musicals and theatre performances aside, the Mastercard Theatre at Marina Bay Sands was transformed into a circus tent on stage.

CIRCUS 1903 - The Golden Age of Circus features death-defying high-wire acts, contortionists, bicycle wheel of death, knife throwers and much more daredevil entertainment. We were gripping tight to our seats as we watched the circus performers "rehearse" and "prepare" (in Act 1) for the grand circus show (in Act 2).

Act: Russia Cradle

Russian Cradle Performers - Marcella Collares de Queiroz Ribeir & Olavo Rocha Muniz.

The danger level was elevated because all these acts were performed within the tight restraint of the stage. Though there were safety mats, but I wouldn't want to imagine if there were any incidents. But not all acts were that heart bursting. Luckily, the Ringmaster (David Williamson) was there in between the acts for some comedic relief as while as interaction with the audience.

I was especially drawn to the Contortionist - Senayt Asefa Amare from Ethiopia. The way she contorts her body was never seen before, she was so flexible, bending her body in remarkable poses.

Contortionist Senayet Assefa Amare

I've seen several contorting acts before but Senayt really got me freaked, it's as though her body joints do not exist! You have got to see it, to believe it!

Of course, the highlight of Circus 1903 is that there are no live animals. The African Elephants (Queenie and Peanut), you see in the ads and posters are actually a clever, never-seen-before scaled puppetry that requires 4 puppeteers to "animate" the elephant.

Created by the model makers who created the National Theatre's War Horse, Queenie and Peanut were brought to life on stage through exquisite movements. They move like real elephants, ear flipping and playing with water, demonstrating a mother and child relationship on stage, bringing us laughs, cheers and a little happy tear...

Both hubby and I truly enjoyed the Circus 1903. It was an extraordinary evening Base Entertainment Asia presented and we went home hoping for more. It is a beautiful piece of performance for audiences of all ages and it will be ending this weekend, be sure to catch it before it goes!

You would not want to miss the jaw-clenching show that boasts the world's most daring and death defying acts - Wheel of Death and the Sphere of Fear.
