Step Into the Life of Frida Kahlo At the ArtScience Museum: Frida Forever

Hi Huneybees,

Frida Kahlo, the iconic Mexican artist, is universally recognized as one of the most influential female artists of the 20th century. Famous for her powerful self-portraits, Kahlo’s work explores themes of identity, the human body, and her remarkable resilience in the face of personal challenges.

In tribute to her enduring legacy, ArtScience Museum presents Frida Forever, a special exhibition running until September 1, 2024. This showcase is part of the museum's "Year of Extraordinary Women," celebrating Kahlo and other remarkable women throughout the year.

The exhibition is divided into three engaging segments - Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, Bare: Frida's Inner World, and an immersive VR experience - Exquisite Corpse, to complete the journey. Rather than focusing solely on her art, the spotlight shifts to explore her life in depth: her childhood, inspirations, motifs, iconic dresses, medical history, and even her trauma. Adding to the allure, the exhibition features works never before seen outside the United States, offering visitors a rare and unique experience.

Produced by Layers of Reality and the Frida Kahlo Corporation, the first segment, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, immerses visitors in Kahlo's life story through cutting-edge technology. Spanning eight thematic spaces, the exhibition features photographs, films, 360-degree projections, interactive installations, and multi-layered technology to trace her journey from childhood to the life-altering accident that shaped her path as an iconic artist. This segment also delves into Kahlo’s other passions beyond painting, such as her political activism and romantic relationships.

Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon

The exhibition opens with a strikingly designed altar dedicated to Frida Kahlo, reflecting the Mexican tradition of honoring life after death. While this might seem a bit morbid to some Asian audiences, it feels fitting and respectful as a prelude to exploring her life and legacy.

As we move further into the exhibition, a stunning garden scene unfolds - The Garden of Love, featured for the first time, is inspired by Frida Kahlo’s own garden at the Blue House. This section highlights Frida's deep love for nature, showcasing her surrounded by flowers, plants, and animals. The vibrant, Mexican-inspired garden brims with images of her in her botanical world. Here, you can also participate in a special program by adding your own love wishes to the garden, contributing to its ever-growing beauty.

The Accident segment highlights a pivotal moment in Frida's life—the near-fatal accident that shattered her body but ignited her passion for painting. This multimedia installation employs innovative multi-layer technology, using overlapping projections to create a stunning three-dimensional effect that immerses visitors in her experience. You can almost feel the depth of her pain as you witness this transformative chapter of her life.

Standing before the multimedia installation, The Dream, as it slowly unfolds, is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit. This artwork reflects the period when Frida Kahlo was bedridden, during which she created many of her most significant pieces. Through intricate projection mapping and an AI algorithm inspired by her work, the installation beautifully portrays themes of life, death, health, and illness, encapsulating the complexities of her experiences.

There's an interactive area where you can discover iconic symbols and motifs that frequently appear in Frida's art, like the monkey, sugar skull, pineapples, and flowers. The Endless Symbology section is perfect for capturing some Instagram-worthy photos or TikTok videos.

At La Rosita, you can sit down and color your own portrait of Frida Kahlo, drawing inspiration from her famous self-portraits. This experience recreates the moments when Frida would paint with her students along the vibrant streets of Mexico. Once finished, you can scan your artwork and watch it come to life as an animated projection on a large screen.

The seventh themed space is dedicated to Frida Kahlo's global travels and the influential people she met along the way. This colorful section highlights her journeys from Mexico to cultural centers like New York and Paris, where she connected with famed artists like Marcel Duchamp. Visitors can fully immerse themselves in her story through an impressive 360-degree digital projection of photographs, animations, and graphics, creating a continuous loop of her remarkable history.

The Fashion Icon segment offers a rare chance to get up close and personal with Frida Kahlo's iconic garments, on loan from the Frida Kahlo Corporation. This display highlights her vibrant, traditional weavings and showcases how deeply she embraced her culture and love for color. Her fashion continues to transcend generations, leaving a lasting impact on the world of style.

Bare: Frida's Inner World

The second exhibition, Bare: Frida's Inner World, delves deeper into Kahlo's personal and medical struggles. With the support of her great niece, Cristina Kahlo AlcalĂ¡, and fashion curator Circe Henestrosa, this segment offers a revealing look at her complex health journey. It highlights her time at the American British Cowdray Hospital in Mexico, featuring medical records, photographs, and even an X-ray of her spine taken just three months before her passing on July 13, 1954.

Visitors can also examine clinical datasheets detailing her health leading up to her final major surgery in 1953, when her lower right leg was amputated due to gangrene. Taking it a step further, a team of medical experts from Singapore—including an orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, and clinical psychologist—were invited to provide modern-day insights. Their analysis brings new understanding to the physical and emotional pain Kahlo endured, offering a fresh perspective on her life and resilience.

Exquisite Corpse

Conclude your visit to Frida Forever by heading to the VR gallery on Level 4 for the final segment, Exquisite Corpse, created by Layers of Reality and Blit Studios. Immerse yourself in a virtual reality experience that explores the rich and imaginative world of Frida Kahlo's mind. Step inside her home and enter the intimate space of her bed, where she spent countless hours recovering. From there, embark on a captivating nine-minute journey through vivid, dreamlike landscapes inspired by her iconic artworks.

After walking through the Frida Forever exhibition, I’m left in awe of Frida Kahlo’s enduring spirit, her resilience, and the profound depth of her life story. Each segment, from the intimate glimpses into her personal struggles to the vibrant exploration of her artistic world, reveals a woman who channeled immense pain into stunning works of art. Her legacy has been so beautifully preserved, allowing us to connect not just with her art but with her as a person. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit, and I leave feeling inspired by her courage, creativity, and timeless impact.

Come talk a walk into Frida's life at Frida Forever.

Let Us Drift Into Utopias With The Inflatables

Hi Huneybees,

Art appreciation is an important way to develop critical and innovative thinking and that is why yours truly Queen Bee and I do set aside some time in our fast-paced lifestyle to do that.

Floating Utopias is one such exhibition that promises to evoke consciousness and playfulness, while at the same time provides the educational value not just about the history of inflatables but also the invisible power that it has wielded by men since its creation.

The enormous inflatables first appeared at Macy's Christmas Parade in 1927 was designed by Anthony Frederick Sarg that would become almost synonymous with the annual holiday tradition

While we could debate on whether there was link between King Louis XVI decree of the first human flight in a hot air balloon in 1783 and start of the French revolution 6 years after that led to his execution, inflatables have since been used for propagating different idealism, from Macy's use of enormous inflatable cartoons and caricatures during its Christmas Parade in 1927 to promote consumerism; to Soviet Union using it in 1937 to mobilise sentiments against the rise of fascism in Europe.

Likewise in Singapore, inflatables are often used in big parades like NDP and Chingay, such as the recent use of a life-size Formula One car replica during Chingay Parade 2019 to engage the youths.

Whether it's a public space or private one, inflatables do take up spaces but in today's increasingly scepticism sentiment among people, due to security concern and rapid urbanisation, space itself has becoming a premium and hence the use of space by inflatable can act as a barometer to measure people's tolerance towards space.

Dawn Ng and her colossal bunny - Walter
Walter, by local artist Dawn Ng, is originally created in 2011 to re-examine overlooked and over- familiar spaces around Singapore, has re-emerged as an exhibit at Floating Utopias to test audience's comfort level of personal space by having them housed in a small room with the colossal bunny.

Museum of the Moon is Luke Jerram largest work to date and it is installed to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing by NASA astronauts in 1969

The highlight of the exhibition for me is definitely the Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram where a floating sculpture of the Moon, made using state of the art scientific images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Oribiter Camera! Spanning 6 meters in diameter and is a 1:600,000 scaled replica of the actual moon, I bet anyone will share some sort of an extraordinary experience by simply admiring the exquisite detail of the lunar surface so close up.

Outside the exhibition, there are also public activities such as Speak Out Stand Out hands-on workshop for children at  SGD$5 per participant and the free screening of icon Up and Away animation for the family to enjoy.

Artistes descended to Singapore for the Press Conference at ArtScience Museum on 24th May included Graham Stevens (Left), Ahmet Ă–gĂ¼t (Center) and Dawn Ng
A visual experience that features more than 40 objects and artworks, including eight large-scale air-filled sculptures, by more than 15 international and local artists, Floating Utopias is currently running at ArtScience Museum from now till 29th September 2019. Limited daily guided tour in English, Mandarin and even Japanese are available at selected day and timeslot.

Explore Floating Utopia as a couple with an open mind, allows this invention of inflatable shaped the way we understand the world, our place in it and a memorable time drifting in time and space together.

10 Things I Love About The 'Marvel Studios: Ten Years of Heroes' Exhibition

Hi Huneybees,

It's been 10 years since Iron Man first popped on to our cinema screens, spawning one after another movie, creating one of the biggest movie franchise out there that now it's been named as a universe - Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Jumping out of the Marvel Comics, are the superheroes we know as the Avengers. Whilst the cast who plays the superheroes assemble to get their very own commemorative tattoo, we the Marvel fans here in Singapore, get to indulge ourselves in the World of Marvel at the 'Marvel Studios: Ten Years of Heroes' exhibition.

10 years, 19 movies all compacted into a gallery space within the ArtScience Museum with 10 themed sections for you to step into the MCU. I was there for a media preview, took a plethora of photos and here's 10 things I love about the exhibition...

1) Movie Posters Gallery
Every single Marvel movie poster featured alongside with a little playback, summary and categorized according to order will bring you down memory lane. Which ones have you watched before? Did you miss any of them? If I could have a special room for mementos, this dream room will definitely be the one.

2) Light Projection Iron Man
Entering the Stark Tower, stands a white Iron Man statue. The Hall of Armors pop up on the screen behind and light projection via mapping is cast onto the statue to show you the evolution of armors Iron Man has worked on. Going from Mark I to Mark XLVI, you will get to see how the pieces come together and what upgrades have been made.

3) Thor's Hammer
Stepping out of the Bifrost, brings you to the Sakaar's gladiator scene where the iconic battle between Thor and Hulk from 'Thor: Ragnorok' happened. That may be a magnificent scene to marvel at but what's hiding at a corner is the Mjolnir. I tried, but guess I wasn't the chosen one, it's your turn now...

4) I Am Groot
One of my favourite characters from the MCU, makes an appearance too. I grooved to the soundtracks from the Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and dance along with Baby Groot!

5) Opening Portals with Doctor Strange
This might just be as close as I can get to Benedict Cumberbatch! That charming Doctor Strange vibe makes him so mysterious~ Not only did I get to take endless pictures with "him", I also got a chance to practice Alchemy, bending reality and opening portals to some of Singapore's iconic tourist spots!

6) Wakanda Forever
Yes, you can travel to the secretive Wakanda without the need for your passport. At this gallery, you can enter the Panther Cave to meet Black Panther himself and explore their tech. I do love the whole setup but if there was a section for Shuri's tech lab, it will be perfect!

7) Microscopic World
I was tracing the little ants on the floor and popped into this space, wondering what is there to see. Then I noticed 2 magnifying glasses which behind stood Ant-Man and The Wasp. So, this is how small they are?! I could pinch them with my fingers! Well, prepare your microlens for this gallery (don't be like me) coz they are very detailed and you wouldn't want to miss it.

8) Thanos
At this last section of the exhibition, stands Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet, where you can activate it with each of the Infinity Stones via an interactive display. Though he is being named as the villain of the MCU, I can't help feeling in awe for this character. He had a mission and spent all his efforts to fulfill that; all the determination and "discipline" in improving and empowering himself, is definitely the kind of spirit I look up to and hope to have.

9) Group Photo
Remember that famous Oscar Selfie by Ellen DeGeneres? Top that at the photo wall upon exit with an epic MCU wefie. The whole cast of the Marvel movie series, joined with the director and even Stan Lee have all lined up for that shot with you!

10) Exclusive Merchandise
Don't rush out of the exhibition just yet. The souvenir store is there waiting and right at the middle, you can spot these black t-shirts with a number 10 printed on the back. These are sold exclusively to commemorate the 10th anniversary MCU and you can choose different designs that feature a silhouette of your favourite superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, etc...

So there you have it, these are the 10 little things I love about the 'Marvel Studios: Ten Years of Heroes' Exhibition. There are so much more for you to explore and photo spots for all your social media sharing. Be sure to head on over to the ArtScience Museum to check it out.

"Van Cleef & Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems" Premieres In Singapore This April

Hi Huneybees,

Exploring the worlds of exquisite jewellery and their links to minerals, as Van Cleef & Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems exhibition premieres at Marina Bay Sands’ ArtScience Museum on April 23. Co-curated with ArtScience Museum, over 400 stunning creations from Van Cleef & Arpels and 250 minerals from the French National Museum of Natural History Collection will be on display.
A first for Van Cleef & Arpels, the exhibition will feature two complementing routes to showcase the intersection between the science of mineralogy and the art of jewellery making: one route unearths the evolution of minerals from the deep Earth to its surface, and the other presents the transformation of these minerals into precious works of art in the hands of the Maison’s best craftsmen, known as the Mains d’Or”.

Documenting over 100 years of history, Van Cleef & Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems is the largest heritage exhibition of Van Cleef & Arpels, in collaboration with French National Museum of Natural History at L’École Van Cleef & Arpels' invitation. The stunning pieces of the exhibition are from the Maison’s archive collection, and also include pieces on loan from private collectors globally. Co-curated with ArtScience Museum, this is the first-of-its-kind exhibition that blends art, craft, history and geoscience with the elegance and style that characterises Van Cleef & Arpels’ rich heritage.

The Singapore exhibition follows a series of seven defining themes: couture, abstractions, influences, precious objects, nature, ballerinas and fairies, and icons. In conjunction with these breath-taking creations are natural treasures and scientific artefacts from Minerals and Gems Collection of the French National Museum of Natural History in Paris, France.

One of Van Cleef & Arpels’ most striking special orders is a flying bird carrying a briolette-cut yellow diamond of 96.62 carats. In the 1930s, this unique gem belonged to the opera singer and socialite Ganna Walska, who wore it as a pendant. In keeping with Van Cleef & Arpels’ tradition of transformability, the bird can also metamorphose into a pair of winged earrings and even a brooch, while the magnificent yellow diamond can be detached from the clip and worn alone as a pendant.
Tickets for the Van Cleef & Arpels: The Art and Science of Gems exhibition will be available on April 1 at all Marina Bay Sands box offices and website. Terms and conditions apply:
